My friends just got himself a YZF250 for offroading, I would like to be able to go offroading with him but im not exactly rolling in money at the moment so i've been thinking of ways to get offroad on the cheap.

I've been considering an old DT125 road bike and then just removing the lights etc and sticking a set of decent nobblies on it, do you think it would be sufficient? What are the other suggestions?

I know of a CCM 250 supermoto that I can get fairly cheap, would it be easy to set that up for decent off roading?

Off road dt125's generally go for around £300+ in this area.
Depends on what kind of off-road you want to use it for,dt's would definately be great for a beginner.

You will pay a lot more for a road legal one (£700+ minimum) .

a cheap way to get into off road would be to give me £900 and i'll give you a KTM 400 thats road legal.

If it's for pure off-road riding, I would go for a motocross bike. They are much lighter than most road bikes and have a decent bit more power.
As you're not looking to win races, an older one in good nick should be fine.
For the all-out cheapest way, the best bet is to keep an eye out for cheap bikes, then buy one Wink.
A while ago I got a KTM350 enduro for £350. A very capable bike that was easy to ride out of the power band and scary when it gripped in. It came with V5 on a sorn. I just kept a good eye on the sites listed in the sticky at the top of the page.

The only CCM250s I've known about are the new ones that are chinese bikes.
What sort of budget do you consider to be 'cheap'?

As cheap as possible Laughing Less that 500 is preferable, not worried about cosmetics or anything, so long as the essentials work!

Would probably be after a 2smoke just so I can do the engine work myself easily.

In that case, I think I'd definitely aim for a late 80s/90s motocross or enduro 2 stroke.
Simple to work on, as you say, light and with reasonable quality of suspension as well as suspension travel.
A DT125 will 'do' but the proper off road bike will give a much better experience and probably be cheaper too.

personally i wouldnt buy a dt for offroading. Id get something a little more solid.. DT's have crap suspension tbh and things break really easy. Go for something 4t thats air cooled and can take way more abuse. XR250 Thumbs Up

trust me.. get a dt and once its been dropped a few times you'll have dented tank, mangled expansion, mangled rad, pissed off with bottoming out rear shock just to name a few.. you wont have any of those probs with an XR250 Thumbs Up

Problem with the XR is that I am useless with valves etc whereas I can rebuild a 2 stroke in my sleep Laughing

I can't see a big problem with using a dt off road to be honest! i used mine every day for months on a motorcross track (aswell as general off roading) and the only problems i had is i buckled the wheels once, but even then that was caused by hitting some HUGE pot holes at about 60mph+.
Mine was dropped and slid down big hills (on it's side) almost daily and still no problems.
At the time i weighed 17 stone aswell Laughing and never had the suspension bottom out (although i never got more than a few feet air off the jumps.)

Obviously a more focused motoX bike would be better but i definately think the dt will last well.
(only thing i didn't like about the 125 is when little kx80's kicked my ass on the straights Laughing )

get the xr250.. im not saying this because i like the xr250 better, it's just that the yamaha DT is known to have lots of issues including a crappy suspension and things really break easily. Try to look for an enduro bike.

or look for a kmx125 2 stroke. it's a dual purpose bike that can run 135kph.
