wire wool is fine as long as you don't go at it too mental or put too much weight behind it

I get good results with a srewed up ball of aluminium foil

it works well on lightly pitted chrome aswell

Only use the finest grade wire wool. Even then, be very careful.

and some solvol autosol. its a paste in a tube (metal polish) its like magic. halfords £5.99

Pink Windolene is the ultimate chrome cleaner. Autosol is an abrasive like wire wool so will remove the chrome over time, though its OK to use them occasionally to remove rust spots etc.

Bingo. Used them on my Chaly exhaust, followed by metal polish and it came up pretty well.
