basically i resprated one of my front pannels on my bike using that shit colour match stuff, anyway this stuff is such shit paint, its impossible to spray it without getting massive orange peel(it dosent so much spray out, it just squirts out)

this paint also has absolutley no resistance to anything, even water seems to eat away at this paint

so basically i wanna just laquer over it, can i do this or do i need to try to sand out most of the orange peel first?

im not looking for a fantastic finish, just one that wont dizzolve when it rains, and one that has some reflective properties.

I'd get somebody else to Lacquer it though, its highly toxic, many containg cyanide which can infiltrate your body via your ear drums.

Sounds like you need a primer before you put the paint on. Even the cheap spray paint can give a good finish with proper preparation.

With water bringing it off, its not able to bond to your panel surface. So lacquer over the top is not really going to help much.

Sand down start again from scratch doing it correctly.

no trust me it is the paint

i preped it properly, used primer, rubbed it back, made sure it was clean. its just really shit paint. i know you can get a good finish with even cheap paints but this stuff is so shit, im an ok sprayer, its the paint

and no, it bonds to the pannel fine, its just a shit finish

and thats abit of an exaduration with water taking it off, but it really is shit stuff, any time i polish it or clean it, i the cloth goes red from the paint

i took it back 3 times complaining that they mixed it wrong, and this was the best they could do, the first 2 cans it literally squirted out the can like a water pistol(no exaduration there, and no it was not the nozzle)
this was the best they could do and it was still shit

trust me its the paint

but yeah, could a i get a half decent finish if i just laquered over it?

for starters always warm the paint before spraying.. stops the splatter effect.

secondly use a high grade wet and dry (1500 maybe) and rub it down to get rid of the orange peel then laquer it.

take your time and do it in very light coats and just build it up. dont try to put too much on in one go or it'll run.

you keep saying its the paint. either use different paint or use it in a gun and not an aerosol. what else are you going to do? keep using the same paint over and over again and keep saying its the paint?

i think doing the same job 3 times and its going wrong every time is enough to realise you need to do something different. and you should be doing it at a good room temperature minimum and laquer just before its dry i believe

I'd flat it back with some fine wet and dry then lacker it. If there are still some imperfections do the same again.
Get hold of some G3 cutting compound when all the paint has hardned and give it a good polish with it. Its better with a polishing mop but it can be used by hand, Just takes a bit of time and muscle!

no, i didnt do the same job 3 times

i warmed up the paint, gave it a good shake tested it on a piece of paper and immediatly took it back to the shop because it squirted out of the can like a water pistol, the first 2 cans didnt even touch the bike, i have only sprayed the bike the once, it was primed, it was warm, it was clean

from about 2-3 feet away the paint would hit an area no bigger than a cd, IT IS THE PAINT, i have had very very good finishes with aerosol paint before, i can get it like glass

it is a colour match, they mix it themselves in the shop, they even admitted they occasionally get it wrong and people come back and they redo it for them, lol why wont people bileve me, do you actually want me to make a video of it accuratley spraying a coin from 6 feet away to proove that it is not mixed right

i know how to paint, i cant really rub it back because i didnt do that many coats so its not that thick and there are a lot of edges where it would go down to the primer, all i am asking is. Could i just laquer over the orange peel and get a decent enough finish?

i did rub it back on a small front pannel ages ago with some 2000 wet and dry and it worked but the paint is still very easily marked and chipped and anything i spill on it will eat away it. i know that laquer is more "hard wearing" than paint and would protect it somewhat

If you usualy get a good finish then surely you should know how it works.
People are giving you good advice above, doing it again properly is the only way you'll get a good finish.
As to you're question:
Lacquer is a clear coat = it wont hide anything so however it looks now is how it'll look with the lacquer on,only it'll have a bit of a shine.

You obviously don't rely on your paint knowledge to pay your bills....

If i'm wrong then explain why i'm wrong and help the OP out Rolling Eyes

I stand by what i said above from my own personal experience of painting two bike's (full re-spray) and LOT'S of cars over the years.
Clear lacquer never hides anything.

right so we have finally got round to answering the question instead of accusing me of asking why it has the orange peel, and me explaining over and over.

well i was thinking that perhaps if i had a smooth enough coat of clear on it, then the surface would be flat, thus partially making the surface look flat instead of orange peely.

look, jesus christ Mad
I KNOW that the proper way to do this is to rub it back and start again using decent paint.

I KNOW that rubbing it back would get rid of it, but i cant as there are too many edges and the paint is too thin.

all i wanted to know is can i do it half arsed and just put lots of laquer over it and get a half decent finish

Well you could have got an answer straight away by using google!
When you ask on a public forum you end up with lot's of opinions, accept it and stop getting all arsey about it.

Orange peel effect (in my experience) is in the lacquer itself so for me has just been a case of rubbing the lacquer down with some really light wet & dry then giving it a real good polish when it's dry.

How about just lacquering it, then telling US how you can recover from having crap paint? If it doesn't work, you were going to have to rub it all down anyway (hell, get the Nitromors out), if it does work you've added another string to your bow.

the orange peel would go with 2 good coats of laquer from a gun, then flat all the laquer down with 2000 grade wet paper and polish up with a machine mop head polisher. You would need to lightly rub down the existing paint thats on there so its not shiny so the laquer takes to the existing paint. But doing this would achieve a flat shiny finish, obviously in perfections in ur existing paint would still be visible.

Laquer aint going to do you any favours, i expect to see a post within a few weeks,
My paint finish is shit after its been laquered HELP..
When ever going through painting any imperfections you think are small get worse the higher up you get, so a small imperfection in primer you might leave, stick base then clear on and it usually looks horrific and you wish you spent the extra time before hand.

AFAIK You should laquer over paint while is is still tacky so it joins together properly otherwise it could just flake off.

Spitfire stop being a tosser placing neg ratings on perfectly fine posts makes you look like a dickhead and I'm fairly sure if a Mod sees it they will revoke them which will lower your karma.
