Part of it will be pride and a mistaken sense of "defeat" when really it should be the opposite.

1) ignore any nasties or jokey remarks on here.
2) be bloody proud that you are doing something about it
3) be careful re medications and steer well away from Venlafaxine/Efexor (very HARD to come off, impossible actually!)
4) be pleased that with luck you will come out the other end a bit more fulfilled and happy with life's lot however shite that may be and that you are not dragging down or losing the very people who love you or that you surround you

I went to the Doctors, took me ages before I went as it was a shame thing and my ex had me convinced that I would be sectioned, I was told I had severe depression, but there was help. I said from the off that I didn't want any medication, turns out that that was the right answer. I wasn't looking for a crutch, I was looking for proper help. I ended up seeing a councillor for about six months, Twice a week at first but towards the end it was when I had something to say.
I'm fine now, still have the odd day when things get a bit too much, but I know why and how to deal it. Things have turned around for me, My job is going well, there is money in the bank, I'm looking at buying a new house and the reason for some of my issues although still there, doesn't affect me.
If you had asked me five years ago about depression i would have said, what a load of shite, pull your finger out and get your socks pulled up ( that is what the caring nurse ex wife said too)
I have regained my strengths in character now and as solid as the rock I used to be. In many ways I'm better for it too. ____________________ Famous last words of Humpty Dumpty. " Stop pushing me "

As said, bottling things up and masking them with drugs, just lead to problems.
Counselling and whining about things on here, is more constructive than getting hooked on evil pharmaceuticals, invented and marketed by "the MAN" for profit.
Admittedly, drugs can help some people out as a temporary measure, but too many people get hooked on them for life, and warped such that the original symptoms of the 'illness' look like nothing compared with the end result.
Its ok to be unhappy with your life, if your life is shit. Making steps to change it may be a good step. If it takes drugs to get you off your arse to do it, maybe they are ok, but if they become th hammock rather than the safety net or crutch, you can have real problems. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Good you've seen you need help fella.
Nothing to be ashamed of. I felt that when I found out, felt like I'd failed - at what I'm not sure of.
Lived with it for years, thinking it was normal.
It eventually cost me everything before I went and got help. Glad I did, 6 years later and life has never been better. Good job, lovely home, remarried and now in higher education.
Drugs do work - they will help with getting everything back on an even[ish] keel and let you sort hout how you want to manage gettign better. As others have said, antidepressants are an absolute shit to come off, but worry about that at the time. The one's I used to take served a purpose. If you find the one's he gives you don't work, ask for a change. I was on mine for 2 years. They should start to work 2-3 weeks after you start, only something to calm how you manage day to day, and you need to look at a longer term answer. Might be a lifestyle change or talking to someone about it.
Don't wait for the NHS to provide help - as a male adult - we're generally the last people they'll help. If you can afford it, then try to pay privately sessions are typically between £20-40, or MIND might be able to offer something |

You probably feel bad because there is a 'label' for what you have got, and because there is stigma attached to the problem you are suffering.
Stick with the pills that they give you for as long as you are prescribed them - don't keep coming off them as it'll do nothing for your well being. They should help 'even you out' and get you into an even keel.
Ask for help coming off them when you think that you are ready. But remember, it takes a good 3-4 weeks for the 'even state' to appear...some people use anti-dee's for years. That is nothing to be ashamed of.
Maybe it might help if you can find a local self help group, some like-minded people you can go and chat to, people that won't get 'tired' of hearing you go over and over your problems to them.
Good luck with it all. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |

A lot of good stuff being said here, so I won't add to it too much. It is hard accepting you are a bit 'mental' - I am, and my employers are fully aware. That was initially very hard to cope with, but it's OK now and I am very much better. Hopefully you will get there too mate.
Drugs and counselling did me the world of good. Depression is horrible and I am now so happy to be out of it (for the moment, never say never - always be on your guard). Take all the help you can, no matter how hard that is at first.
Good luck. ____________________ In everyday life good people do good things, bad people do bad things. It takes religion to make a good person do bad things. |

Sometimes you need to go through the really low times, allow yourself to wallow...don't beat yourself up about it. Writing it all down - rather than voicing it, is very good advice.
People/friends will try and fix it for you. It's not for anything other than they give a shit (I have been guilty of this myself)...but is often not what you need. Others can support you. Others can listen. But there is only one person who can lift you from this depression, and that is you. ____________________ Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter won't mind - Dr. Seuss |
