My laptop screen runs at 1600x1200, but for a few experiments I want to run it at 1024x768. I can do this by the usual method of just reducing the resolution, but it stretches to fill my whole screen. What I'd like to achieve is to have the equivalent of a 1024x768 window, with the rest of the screen unused.
Any software out there that'll let me do this?

Possibly a heavily modified driver. Unfortunately normally the screen it's self using the VGA standard or whatever tells the graphics card what resolutions it's capable of (hence the list that is found in properties), and when the screen is informed by the graphics card what resolution is being pumped out (well, when it detects it), the screen it's self is what "stretches" the image, so hardware not software. This is evidenced by some old laptops that displayed the windows loading screen in pixel perfect resolution in the centre of the screen as you are describing.
Maybe some crazy linux hax, and then run a VM inside of that. Yeah that ought to do it, I heard X can literally be infinitely configured

Check the BIOS for an option like 'LCD Panel Expansion' or something similar, which either makes the selected resolution fill the entire screen or just displays it pixel-perfect.

Turning off LCD expansion works until Windows gets its talons into it, then it goes back to stretching.
