Killed your first bike. Not nesseseraly wrote off but did serious damage by dropping or crashing. The reason i ask is im finding it hard to not think of getting a nice / faired bike as my first despite being told i will drop it. Thanks

Almost dropped it the first week I had it, coming out of tesco's where they laid down random sized stones (pretty damn stupid) at the exit and the wheel slipped off one but I (only) just managed to catch it.

Came off/crashed at 15mph 3 months after I started.

My first bike was a CG though, so all I needed was a spanner to tighten up my right hand mirror Thumbs Up If I had a faired bike... I probably wouldn't have caught it, and the off would have caused a heck of a lot more damage.

Not I!

My 2008 my Aprilia RS 125 was brand new when i bought it a week before i was 17, and used it as much as i could since. First bike, first time i'd ridden a bike since my CBT 6 months before. Just be careful, take note of conditions etc and don't push you're ability too much and with a bit of luck you're nice shiny fairings will remain unscathed. Very Happy

I'm not saying ride like a pussy: before i was 18 i'd got my KD (within a day of getting leathers with sliders) just know you're limits and don't be stupid Very Happy

I didn't write it off, but I did plough into a shed on my first trip around the garden. Smashed up my mothers roses.

The very same bike got skidded many times on wet grass, and spun round on my first outing on ice. In fact I have come off bikes quite few times on ice, breaking the handlebar levers or indicators. But that was because the bike was the only means of transport in those days - and walking or taking the bus was NOT an option. Smile

I dropped the CG MANY MANY MANY times and all i ever had to replace was a mirror and brake/clutch levers.

Then that got stolen, and i recently got my 2nd CG written off.

Up to you what bike you get.... if it is a faired one get crash bungs. every little helps.

Dropped my first 600 when moving it off the gfs driveway so her mum could park up, ended up not putting the sidestand down properly and over it went. Then a year later crashed it in horrendous weather Thumbs Up

List of bikes I've owned in my profile - just looked and reckon there's maybe five I've not crashed (and one someone else crashed while I owned it.) Crashed my first bike loads defitely. However, if you put your mind to it, it's perfectly possible not too.

I was pretty lucky I think. I dropped my sisters KE100 a few times when I was in my early teens bombing around fields but never did any damage. As for my first bike, I had one minor shunt and the bike was fine. It was the second bike I had that I messed up, although I repaired that and did about another 40k miles on it without incident.

Note that 'riding sensibly' does involve making a fair bit of effort while riding generally and to improve your skills.

I ride sensibly. I used to ride even more sensibly. Still managed to come off about 5 times in my 2 years.

Get crash bungs. Seriously.

Never dropped or crashed my first bike, even on track Very Happy

I got a nice bike for my first one, I had the intention of buying an unfaired cheap bike to get around on, went in to the shop to look at one, and they had a nice shiny 06 R6 in black sitting there, I ended up buying it pretty much instantly! Cost about £4000 more then the one I was looking at, was worth it though! Get your self to a track, it teaches you loads of things about bike control that you don't really learn by just riding on the roads.

It took me ages to learn not to use the front brake at low speeds, particularly when turning. The front wheel locks up and the bike goes down if you are not careful, particularly on wet grass, gravel, cold wet roads etc.

I'm not going to say how many times I locked up the front this way and dropped it, but quite a few.

I'd even suggest just using the back brake and engine braking for most riding, and only using the front when you need to stop a bit sharpish.

1st bike...

None at all.

Since that well, 30+ years ago, i put a X7 under a truck and killed it... Embarassed Which is my only road off. Put many a birt bike down when messing around, but never killed one.

Now since getting back into bikes in the last 3/4 years i have 3 bikes and its only the last 600 that i have dropped twice. Once at a petrol station when Mrs was getting on and i lost my footing on the surface. Result bust indicator only.
2nd time was turning outside house and got past the point of no return so let it down gently and again broke indicator, but this time also scratched fairing and exhaust.

TBH. Don't take it as read that you will drop your bike. Given that a 125 is very light in any slow speed you have a very good chance of keeping it off the ground or at least making it a very soft landing.
Just get whatever bike you want, as its you riding it not some forum jockey.. Thumbs Up Karma

My first bike was fine when I sold it on, my third bike (RG125F) got ploughed into the back of a Skoda at about 60mph. I've dropped two of my Blades, my Bandit 1200 and my Fazer, no real damage to any of those though as they were at standstill and I always had crash bungs fitted.

Cheers

I definately feel some sympathy towards my first bike. It was a brand new Honda NSR125R bought in the year 2000 on finance.

During the (almost) three years of ownership the following occured:

- Large downhill slide/crash into parked car in heavy rain
- Knocked it off it's sidestand in Asda carpark
- Knocked off sidestand outside my flat
- Crashed it riding uphill on ice
- Lowside on roundabout outside work
- Seized engine (after 17000 miles) and tried unsuccesfully to bump it

I once took it back to the dealer I bought it from complaining of vibrations at speed. Turns out all but one of the engine bolt brackets had sheared off in my last crash.

I still sold it for more than my mate's mint identical bike though. Very Happy

Blew up the engine on the ZXR and then crashed my 2nd bike after just a few miles of buying it.

No drama or problems since.

Very Happy

I have yet to drop my (first) bike, although it went over yesterday... caused by my hub dropping his bike onto mine!!! Brick Wall

Thankfully the shelves in the garage kept it semi upright and the only damage is a broken number plate. Hubbys bike is a different story though, he has managed to put a huge dent in his tank and scuff up the paint work, not to mention how mad he is at himself!!

Embarassed Laughing

Guilty as charged wupwup.
After dropping my KR125 into the front of a little car, the insurance couldn't, wouldn't, replace the bits that needed done within the cost of the bike. Plastic is surprisingly expensive, fairings doubly so Sad No bike for some months now, and am a large Christmas present and a month or more smooth talking the other half away from being allowed near another bike salesroom.

I've 'dropped' my mint 2008 Aprilia RS125 once.

Repair bill £500ish (cosmetic damage only so I was lucky).. some bits still not perfect but cannot be arsed to change them anymore as probably I'll drop it again anyway.
