I've pretty much decided that I'm going to retire from biking for a short while (kiddie on the way) but don't know the best place for selling on the bike. My options would be dealer, ebay, bike trader or here. What has everyone else done when selling on their bikes ?

All mine have gone on ebay so far without too much trouble. You`ll get plenty of bargain hunters offering stupid money on ebay but its easy to just say no and wait for someone serious to pop up near the end of the auction/ad-listing.

Going to a dealer means youre going to lose a fair wedge compared to selling private but the advantage to a dealer is you dont have to wait around. If you like the price he offers you....the bike`s sold there and then and you get the money straight away.

what bike/model/year are you sellling anyway?might be easier to suggest something once thats known. Wink

eBay classifieds, then spam bike forums with the ad. BikeTrader and MCN too if you're in a rush to sell, plus pepper Gumtree cities that are close to you.

Short while ? I know folk who have done this then not got back on for years as it's difficult to justify splashing out on a bike after the birth !

All the above suggestions. If you are in no hury to sell then start with the free sites (forums/gumtree/PH/ local papers) No point paying to sell it if you can shift it for free.

If you get no joy there then get some ads up on ebay/biketrader and the like. I recently sold a ZX9R using the classified listing on ebay, think it was £8.99 or something but lasts a month and can be set up to take offers and also automatically reject any stupid offers from chancers Thumbs Up

I know but priorities change and as my cam belt's just snapped on my car I need to recover some of the £500 that's cost me, tough enough coping with losing my wifes salary lol.

I completly understand, you've got to make some sacrafices for your new family. I was in your situation 2 and a half years ago.
I saved up abit of money and was about to book my DAS. My then girlfriend (whos now my wife Mr. Green ) told me she was pregnant with our first child.

So the money I had was spent on baby stuff and the bike thing had to wait. Now my little boy is 2 and his little bro is 4 months, I've strated the whole biking thing again Very Happy

I know it's difficult to justify splashing out on a bike after the birth but give it a few months or a few years and see how you feel Thumbs Up

We'd decided to try for kids thinking it'd take a while but 1 week later she came running into the bedroom at 3:00am waving the wee stick about saying "I'm pregnant".. could of done without it following a hefty evening of cider quaffing but still awesome feeling.
ah the joys of virility Razz
Sarah didn't want to go pillion on the bandit but she will if I get a cruiser with a comfy seat. (it's what I wanted anyway. Triumph Rocket III will do, stick it on the xmas list see what happens)

With a bike that age,(and also bearing in mind its a very common bike and theres always lots of others for sale).....i would probably do an auction on it and set the starting bid a lot lower than the amount i actually wanted for it. (to generate some interest in the advert).

if you set an unreasonable starting price,it probably wont sell.
If you want its exact worth and arent in a rush for some money back, you could do a classified ad with a fixed price and no offers.
Thats risky though, unless its a real peach of a bike in tiptop condition.

good luck mate..i reckon you should just get what you can for it then concentrate on more important things.Auction it for 500 notes and hope for the best. (with any luck you might get 1000-1500 for it )

The free places (Gumtree, Pistonheads and here) don't seem to attract as many buyers. I used to always buy and sell vehicles through adtrader which was free and effective but these days for a quick sale I think you have to shell out for Autotrader or Ebay maybe. My CBR's been up on the free sites because I wasn't that serious about selling it but now I reckon it's worth putting it on Autotrader.

The thing that worries me is shelling out for the ad for weeks on end without anybody buying it whereas on Ebay I guess you only pay if it sells? (never used it). The problem is people are looking for rock bottom prices on there as a lot of the vehicles being sold are knackered more than the description admits so it skews the prices somewhat Laughing

If you go for a classified ad then there are no fees to pay after the sale, just the one off fee to list it for a month. Say what you will about ebay and how it is going downhill, full of con merchants/dodgers/bargain hunters and whatnot but for coverage it still takes some beating. Sold mine within a 24 hours although i appreciate i could have gotten lucky there!

I put ads up in the local biker cafes, on loads of biker forums, onto bike club forums too.
