Looking for a train ticket to Edingburgh on April 2nd 2010 so was browsing the trainline.com for prices.

I fouled myself in a most undignified manner when I saw £105 touted as the cheapest ticket. I don't catch the train anywhere remarkable too much, and had always heard people moaning that train fares are extortionate, but now that I've seen it with my own eyes, is this the typical picture? What a fucking joke - I can fly there for cheaper!

So fellow BCF comrades, can anyone find a cheaper ticket for this journey (return journey btw)??

Cheers,

GhostRider

www.RailEasy.co.uk

you can only book uptil 26th feb so far, but to give you idea of price

Leaving Bham 06:17 -> Edinburgh 10:20 (25th feb)

and coming back day after at

Edinburgh 06:52 -> Bham 10:55 (26th feb)

you can do that for £38 return

Have you thought about looking how much a coach would be? Either that or take a bus or coach to say Manchester and a train the rest of the way to try and bring down the cost.

When I go from Skegness to Preston, by getting the bus to Lincoln and getting the train from there I save £20, although this is partly down to the train having to go a long way round due to where the track is.

Could only manage Cross Country Trains Off Peak Return @ £101.80.
Didn't know if it was same day return so I had return date as 4/4/10 in case you were staying the weekend.

It may well be cheaper getting a domestic flight. A friend of mine recently flew from London to Aberdeen for £37 return I think.

Its £26.50 on the megabus round trip, probably take a very long time though!

Trouble is with air fares does that include the transfers? Not saying that'll be avoided with the train except train stations are usually in the town/city and have good transport links and options. Also remember to factor in the extra check-in time for the air journey. Plus only take carry on luggage for a fast exit from the airport.

There's more to travel than just the cost, although you need to start somewhere (pun intended Very Happy)

Some good suggestions here, I'll have to explore them further when I get back from work.

Whilst a flight could work out cheaper and quicker, it would also mean I'd have to insert things into my anus such that they are not discovered on my person, I'd rather avoid this. Plus half the fun of a road trip is the journey there and back, and getting a flight just seems a bit stale.

surely, you only have to go through customs, if its an international flight ?

I've not been on a domestic flight, so I can't be sure I'm right.

You don't go through customs but still need to go through security, xraying bags etc..

I would have thought that would be looking for weapons then.

I can understand someone not wanting to take the risk though.

I'd hoped it wouldn't be the case, but a friend who has done the plane journey to edingburgh himself said that you still get bags searched, empty pockets, x-ray conveyor belt etc.

Drugs are available in Edinburgh, quite a lot of them and I believe prices are compatable to those in Aston Newtown.

Aside from the fact I can't translate what scottish people speak into english, one prefers to aquire their medication from a reliable source.

Only if you look dodgy, the vast majority of people just walk straight through without being stopped.

You could encounter police with sniffer dogs in a train station.

I have a bad track record of being searched at airports, seriously, in Newark they had me aside for 15 minutes repeatedly scanning me, taking my shoes off, emptying my suitcase - and I was with my mom and dad!!

Another time in Germany I got a thorough going over in front of my boss and work colleagues who waited for 10 mins while I was given a good going over - my boss even said to me in the que for the metal detector that one of the guards was giving me evil daggers.

I have one of those faces you see.

Single ticket prices start at £15.50 depending on the day/time and date you wish to travel. They're quite restrictive in that you can only travel on the specified train and route but it is the most cost effective way of doing it by rail.

I recently travelled first class to and from Paddington for £60 total, using two singles, if I'd booked a week or two early I'd have got it for £40.

Keep an eye on the website about 6 weeks to a month from the date you wish to travel and as soon as the cheap singles are posted grab 'em!

You might even get a good first class deal if you're inclined but the good news with booking in advance is that you get a reserved seat anyway.

I'm the reverse, I look like a drug dealer, pony tail, beard, cannabis related T shirt
coming back from amsterdam reeking of week having been at the cannabis cup
knowing full well I have 5g inside my wallet in my inner jacket pocket
most I had from the Uk customs was a swab of my passport looking for traces of coke or explosives ??

French customs on the other hand are c****s
your luck you only got a good going over in front of your boss
I got mine strip searched at the euro star terminal in france
we were on our way back from Amsterdam and we got pulled over by the French customs
they found some cannabis seeds we were bringing to England (perfectly legal)
but because of that they gave us the pat down and found 3g of Black in pocket

lets just say its lucky my boss has a sense of humour
