Anyone ever ridden one of these Renamed GPZ's? They are exactly what I want from a Motorcycle as my main bike. The style is also gorgeous to me, Retro and sharp. I was just wondering if anyone would be able to give me an hones opinion on these bikes with some pro's and con's
I also love the Yamaha XJ650 too if anyone has ridden one of these...

Renamed GPz? It's either a 750 Turbo, a GPz 750 Turbo or a ZX750E, take your pick. ZX covers many bikes in the Kwak stable.

I've owned a couple, still have much of one in the garage and will own another once funds allow. For one in decent and usable condition expect to pay a fair bit, they're becoming seriously collectable in standard trim.

Pro - It's a pretty unique riding experience and watching the LCD boost gauge is fun.

Con - Standard HT-10B turbo units are not great to start with and are showing their age now. It's an enthusiasts bike, expect to require decent spannering skills to run one.

To repeat what my brother said in the mid 90's when he rode one...

"It accelerates like a trail bike... Bonkers!"

They handle just like a standard GPZ750 so they're crap by modern standards... But I never had trouble with my GPZ (non-turbo), just treat it with respect and watch out for tank slappers... Though those can be minimised by letting a new chain wear quick to begin with then adjusting it so you have an extra inch of wheelbase, when the eccentric adjuster is near the end of it's travel, handling improves dramatically. Taking time to set up the rear suspension helps a great deal too.

From what I have read, they're not always so reliable and need regular maintenance with turbo rebuilds being recommended every 10k I think.

I wouldn't fancy one as a main bike just in case the turbo popped. For similar looking bikes, have a look at the later GPZ750 (which was fully faired) or the GPZ900R.

I was very tempted to get one a few years back when a very tidy example came on the market locally but I decided against it.

I was told that although it was named the gpz, it was never actually badged as a gpz by the factory. Not 100 percent sure though. Sad

The actual model is ZX750E.

I had a GPz750R (the race homologation version of the GPz900) and its actual model number was ZX750G1 i believe.

ZX's are called GPz in some markets-its not the other way round.

Hi

Don't think Kwak badged or sold it as a GPz, just Z750 Turbo.

With the GPZ/GPz the small Z normally went with air cooled bikes and the large Z with liquid cooled bikes.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Strange. The 750 seemed to use a small z while the 900 used a large z. Looking at other water cooled ones they also use a large Z (eg, GPZ600R).

All the best

Keith

They didn't use a Z prefix afaik, Kwak themselves called it the "750 Turbo" in the showrooms.

Is sometimes utterly astounded at the levels of pedantic nerdery on the internet

It has always been a Gpz750 Turbo when you talk about them, well, it has amongst my mates.

From memory they looked exactly the same as the standard GPZ750 Uni Track jobbie, but with different paint, till you looked closer and saw the boost thingy, and the turbo.

I've always loved the long GPZ750/1100 Uni Tracks, D+K have got the 1100 in, you look down and see the engine sticking out from the sides of the bike, instead of looking down and only seeing the tank, long stretch to the narrow bars, but feel really nice. One of my mates used to make one of these things do stupid stuff, he used to just set it up for the bend and try to hang on and concentrate on the exit. I will always remember him coming past the Moorville Hall with it slapping and snaking at about 140. Nutter! He's stopped riding since.
