Not really bike related atm so I will put this here.

https://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/10/lotus-omnivore-engine-is-10-more-efficient-with-more-to-come

Lotus have designed a 2 stroke engine that can run on petrol or diesel, has a variable compression ratio and runs more efficiently than previous SI or CI engines.

Also a vid

So, is this a 2 stroke that is lubricated in the way a 4 stroke normally is?

Quote:
Other Components

The cranktrain of the engine comprises an 86 mm stroke crankshaft, a trunk piston of 86 mm bore and a connecting rod with 195.5 mm between centres. The piston carries four piston rings: two pegged half-keystone compression rings which traverse the ports in the upper section, and a Napier scraper ring and U-Flex oil control ring in separate grooves in the lower portion. These are not pegged since they do not have to traverse the ports. In this manner, the working chamber is completely sealed from the crankcase and hence wet- sump lubrication can be employed.

I think that answers my question, but wasn't sure?

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

It is like a 4 stroke engine with only 2 strokes.

Meaning it has a sump, injectors etc but power/exhaust combined, induction and compression combined.

But the fact that they can run on either diesel or petrol is quite awesome and the variable compression ratio idea, clever stuff.

Clever stuff or more complication?

No more complicated than the cleaning of diesel emissions that goes on at the moment, or than VTEC, or VVT etc etc

Cheers

But for a 2 stroke, it's very, very complex.

It would probably be cheaper to just use a twin 4 stroke engine rather than how complicated this is, but that really isn't the purpose of this research I guess. If they can slowly make an uncomplicated 2 stroke that behaves in this way then that would be good for all.
