Going to an interview when you already have a job?

Currently been looking elsewhere for employment due to my need to relocate to Bristol and have been applying for new jobs. However my main concern is how I get the time off work without raising suspicion in my current workplace? Pulling a sicky has got to be a classic excuse?

Any more original ways of getting around this predicament?

If you're relocating, why not just tell them? It's not like you're leaving because you hate the place or are going to a competitor.

Last time I relocated I told my then current employer and was allowed as much off for interviews as I liked, when I liked, which was very good given that I was relocating over here and overnight stays would have been required.

When I was working for a b'stard employer, I got my girlfriend at the time to ring up with an 'emergency' so I could go to an interview... Got the job too!

Just take the day off, say you need to MOT the bke or something, and when you take the interview make sure you tell them NOT to contact your current employer until a formal offer is made.

Employers have to make reasonable adjustments to allow your professional development - including getting other jobs!

I've always discussed it with my manager, and never had problems arranging time off. Being honest has kept them on my side and so (hopefully) meant they were positive in references...

If you've got a decent relationship with your manager then just talk to them - you've got a valid reason for moving on that no one can fault. Although, I always used phrases like "new challenges", "great opportunity", "exciting new post" and not "bored", "hate it here", "you're all b*stards"...

Just say you need to take a days unpaid leave if you havent any holiday left, I have said in the past that I need to finish at such and such a time so that I can make doctors/dentists etc.

But in my experience they will push it right to the limit of the time you've said, can often make you late and rushing to make your appointment gets stressful, so its easier to take the whole day.

I get nothing 'above and beyond' from them, so I really don't care how they react, if I need some time off I give them enough notice and I take it, unpaid if necessary.

I had to take a day off for an interview at short notice lastweek and just told them exactly what it was for, i'd already spoken to them anyway as they'll need to provide a reference. I don't see the problem aslong as you're not just trying to keep it all secret, otherwise if you have holiday left then you just take one day off as and when needed, they don't need to know why.
