Thought about putting this in the geek zone, but it's not IT related as such.

I've been considering getting a star field projector for a while and it appears Lidl are selling a "Bresser" home planetarium next week. Has anyone used anything like this before? Are they actually any good? I'd far rather get something that has an accurate representation of the night sky than something that just sets random laser effects off on the ceiling.

Any advice, comments or suggestions welcome.

I know very little of such things.
But I have a passing interest in them, you know me: often interested in the obscure or bizarre, simply for the humanity found therein.

Anyhow, your post sent me forth to google such things.

And I found this website, quite close to the top.

There's obviously something about this time of the year that brings out the astronerds. On Ducatisti, we've got two threads going about astronomy. Some people sound really knowledgeable, so I'm sure you could get some ideas there if you can't find any BCF astronerds.

Thanks for the heads up Paivi =)

Having seen that site HK linked I'm actually very tempted to make one now, presuming I can find map stencils. So many intriguing possibilities Very Happy

Mmmmm, the chap on that website DOES seem enthusiastic about his subject, I'm sure he would be happy to let you pick his brains.

One notes he has a Facebook group Laughing

Is the night sky shown by a star field projector any different to the real night sky?

That's the idea Ste, it's supposed to be an accurate picture. On better ones you can sync them or set them to a date/time and it'll be bang on.

I want one for a couple of reasons, find myself stuck in bed and awake at night a fair bit so it would be something cool to look at and also I live in a very light polluted area. Stars really aren't very visible at night.

Problem is clear night sky is something hard to get in the UK, the night sky from Devils Bridge (which has very little light pollution), is quite different to the night sky in say Mongolia where the light pollution is non existent.

You really do see similar views of the night sky to what you see on.
