Hi all I'm new to the forum, just looking for some advice on something. I have an 01 dtr 125, the model with the flat slide carb. So recently I had to do a top end rebuild which went well with no problems. The throttle on the bike has always been a bit dodgy, it would rev up to about 3000 on idle when it was warm and if I turn right the throttle cable must be stretching as it goes up to alarming revs. I though the idle speed must be caused by having a bit of a sticky throttle. After about a week of the rebuild I noticed it would idle at about 4000 now and if I was going along at those revs the throttle would still be a little on after I let it off. So I thought id get a new cable and install it. I started to take it off and when I got to the carb I got a bit stuck. I wasn't sure how to get the cable out of the slide and spring and as this was late at night and I needed it the next day I thought I'd just put it all back together. I tried to start it the next morning and it wasn't having it so I got a lift to work. When I got home I tried again and after about 20 kicks with the choke and petrol tap in different positions it eventually started but revved up to about 5-6000 so I quickly turned it off. Also the throttle has gone incredibly tough to turn but I rereouted the cable as I thought it may solve something so that might be why(?). Just wondering if anyone knows what would cause this? And how to get the cable out of the slide?! Any help is welcome! Thanks Very Happy, Will.

Have you got the carb slide in the right way round?

I once had a bike that had the same symptoms. Stiff throttle, revved to the moon when started...carb slide was in backwards and not shutting.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I do, I'll have another look now, but I think I could only put it one way round as it wouldn't go all the way down the other way

I've just checked and I couldn't get it in the other way so I guess it's in right. I've rerouted the cable again and the throttle doesn't seem as stiff anymore. But I started it Nd it's still doing the the same thing. Intermittently revving up to about 5000 as if I was revved then stopped then revved them stopped and so on every sort of half a second. Just wondering if an air leak could cause this?
