Oh FFS, why does the trailer have to be so damn good? Now i'm excited by a boring aspect (IMO, of course) of WWII. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Looks good, but doesn't look very historically correct. I'm no historian or anything so maybe it is correct but i hate most things on the pacific side of the war.
I just hate the way that they think they were better than the Japanese, when in fact the only reason they beat them was because they dropped a nuke in desperation. They knew they couldn't win any other way. Someone needs to make a series like this but on the British side of the war, after all we were the main fighting force in Europe. The African campaign would be epic if made into a series like this. ____________________ |--Previous--|:2007 Aprilia SX50... --Current--|: 2007 Kawasaki ER-6N

hollis. The Americans would have won the war eventually. Most historians agree that it would have only been another 6 months or so before it finally came to an end, bearing in mind in addition to the USA, the UK forces + commonwealth and Russia were all turning their attentions towards Japan. There is no way Japan would ever have come out victorious. The main reason or so we believe for the Atom bomb was to stop more American deaths in the long term and to reduce cost. Morally wrong? Probably. The acceleration of a certain victory? Definately. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. BTW, I think BBC had the series last time on BBC 2, I hope they get it again and put it on BBC HD. That would be perfect. HD and 5.1 sound, thank you God. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. An equivalent series with a British perspective would be fantastic, but only the yanks can afford to put things together on this scale. If they do as good a job developing the characters in this as they did with BoB then I'm sure it will be excellent, regardless of the setting (not that I think you could ever really say a war was boring). ____________________ Photos and that |

I knew i would get burned by someone that has done history .
I'll admit Band Of Brothers is probably my favourite TV series to date, but sometimes the American gun-ho crap really does my head in. Personally i think it would have been more interesting if they had made a series from the German perspective of D-day, or possibly the Russians side of the war. Much like how "Flags of our fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima" showed both sides of the conflict. |
I think BoB was actually very un 'gung-ho'. They build up characters, only for them to die/dissapear and be replaced.
I liked the epise (can't remeber names or episodes) where a young private was terrified, and towards the end of the episode, shoots a German soldier, after the fight is over, he goes over and looks at the dead soldier, and takes the flower from his lappel.
Then the next episode, the same private gets shot unexpectedly by a sniper! ____________________ Currently Riding - 2002 Aprilia RSV1000 Mille |

Agree with Jon B 100%, however I was quite amused by the "Project X-ray/Bat Bomb", which was actually deployable and was projected to cripple their [Japanese] industry without many fatalities.
However, they went for the Nuke. To be fair, /someone/ was going to use it eventually. It needed to be field 'tested' against hostiles to prove a point, and without the Japs catching it I dare say the cold war could of got a lot hotter. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

The first ep went out last night in the US of A. Should any of you nefarious immoral bastards wish to acquire it I'm sure you could find a copy via whichever illicit means you favour.
I might be downloading it now, maybe. The HD version is presumably a must. ____________________ Photos and that |

By the looks of the trailer its going to be good. Hopefully it will be as good as band of brothers some of the scenes look like there taken from band of brothers. I wonder if they will get the veteran's to talk at the start like band of brothers ____________________ Bikes i've owned: mobylette ----- Ts 50er ------ GS 400e ------ CB250n superdream ------r6 ------ bandit 400 ----- 2005 kx 125

It appears to be https://tvshack.net/tv/The_Pacific/
Haven't bothered to watch it yet, on my 'to-do' list tomorrow. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Well I watched it last night and, without wanting to spoil anything, it certainly has the potential to be every bit as good as BoB. The sound and the visuals when the bullets start flying are as good as you'd expect (watch it in HD) and, given a chance to develop a bit, the characters look like they could turn out to be fairly interesting. Like BoB there was a brief interview with a veteran at the start.
| Poseidon wrote: | You should try reading the book. It absolutely blew me away. The TV series was excellent (it's the most watched box set in my DVD collection) but the book had a lot more emotion in it. The problem I have when they make these sorts of accounts into films/tv programs is the actors. They may be very good, but I cannot get my mind away from the fact that they are 5yards away from a film crew and are reciting lines from a script. With the books you're hearing a true account straight from the horses mouth. But thats just me... I'm wierd like that. |
I did read the book funnily enough, though it didn't leave much of an impression. When it comes to books remade as films/TV and vice versa I guess I usually enjoy whichever I see first the most.
| Quote: | This is very true. I would especially like to see something focussed on bomber command. Because of the dubious nature of our bombing campaign on Germany, little is publicised about them. If I remember correctly, there isn't even a proper memorial for the 55,000 men of bomber command who gave their lives for us. In the same way that BoB focussed on easy company, we should have a Bomber Command series focussed on one squadron, from training through to missions... With all the perils, successes and loses they went through. But like you said, we have neither the funds (nor the balls) to make such a bold piece of work. |
I can't see anyone other than the BBC going anywhere near a project like that and the climate is such that there's far less chance of that happening now than at any point in the past decade or so. Christ, a few thinly veiled threats from the Tories lately has been enough to get them to close two full radio stations. Pretty depressing really.
It's a real shame we don't have a UK equivalent of HBO. The quality of their shows is incredible, far beyond 99% of the dross on UK TV. Btw, if any fans of BoB have yet to watch Generation Kill then I thoroughly recommend that too. (Another HBO miniseries following a bunch of marines, set around the time of the invasion of Iraq) ____________________ Photos and that |

I want to watch it so bad, but I dont have Sky movies, and I'm worried getting a rip won't do it justice.
I have BoB, I watched the series and the boxset twice, 3 times in total .
If Pacific comes out on Blue Ray I'll deffinatly get it, despite it probably costing a small fortune. ____________________ Flounced - Long overdue
