Changed my rear brake pads last night, after installing I checked the brake quickly down my hill, and it was ok (as good as it gets for new pads)

Rode into work this morning, then about half way on my journey, my pedal had no resistance, and the rear brake was dead.

Got into work to find all the fluid gone, and a bit dripping down the swingarm onto the ground.

What do you think has happend, and is it an easy fix ?

easy:

You didn't do the nipple bolt up properly, redo refill and bleed.

Harder.

I think you tore the seals of your brake piston(s) when you pushed them in to make space for the new brake pads, an easy mistake

Which means you have to take the caliper off , get the piston out(might be more difficult since you have already lost pressure), then replace the seals refill and rebleed.

When you take the piston out you want to check that the surface is smooth and there are not any burrs on the surface which will tear new seals, if there are you CAN very carefully remove them (like I do) or buy a new piston for £20 sickpup provides them cheaper than anywhere else. and a set of seals.

Before you reassemble clean the inside of the barrel to prevent seizure, and use a plastic ruler to scrap anything stuck on the inside, remove the seals with a flat head screw driver carefully and clean out the grooves they sit in.

Replace them by squeezing them in, pour in some brake fluid into the barrel, and then using both thumbs you should be able to push the piston into the barrel of the caliper it should not require much force.

If you are an old skooler stick some red rubber grease on the piston end, then bleed the brakes, since you emptied you system there will be plenty of air in it, so you will have to pour brake fluid into the resevoir, pump the pedal a few times,

Undo the bleed nipple (which you have put a piece of plastic tubing on submerged in brake fluid so you do not get airback through there), to let the air escape, pumping the brake pedal, watch the bubbles if they retreat into the caliper tighten the bleed nipple and pump the brake pedal , remembering to top up the resevoir so that the hole in the bottom is not exposed.

Once you hear a creeking noise you have SOME pressure and the piston should start to slowly come out, shake the caliper and put a weight on the brake pedal and leave it overnight to get the tiny bubbles out, jobs a gud un
