i have this twin disc xz400
it has single pot calipers,
i have stripped down the calipers, replaced the seals, replaced the pads, cleaned up the discs, replaced and bled the fluid,

but i just can't get the bike to really stop, the brakes work, but they are just shit, the lever is firm and there isn't any air in the lines

its like the pads don't have enough friction to work well enough

should i replace the master as well??

if you have good lever pressure then the MC seems to be doing it's job. things to look at next are things like are the pads contaminated with dirt/oil etc and I once had bad brakes on my blade due to the fact the front brake lever had gone dry thus causing the lever to go hard before it was braking well....funny thing is a bit of grease on the lever pin and adjuster screw sorted that right out!! another thing if your disks are worn is if you put the pads in another order to what they came out as they will need to bed in again. single piston calipers tho wont be the best in the world anyhow!!

+1 on the pads as you have sorted the calipers Thumbs Up

they may well be contaminated yet look ok on inspection.

used to get this on the sprint st as the rear caliper was near the chain and the poor brake was soon rendered completely us.

new pads and you should be fine Thumbs Up

Hi

Is it the original master cylinder or one from a different bike? Possible that the lever ratio is way out which will give you very dead feeling brakes and stuff all breaking power without a lot of lever pressure.

However if standard would go with the comments above. The tip of the lever dragging over the m/c piston as you pull the lever can have an effect (worth trying a touch of greases there).

All the best

Keith
