Hard drives failure?

I just stuck a new samsung drive into my laptop after cloning my old one as I suspected the old one was on its way out.

However the new one every now and again seems to make a couple of quick queit clicks. However this drive is somewhat quieter than my old on which you could hear accessing sectors in the next room.

The click is not the same as the click when you say make the machine go on standby where the heads rest in a certain position which is quite an audible click...

Am I being paranoid or is the disk about to die ?.

I'm backing up important data to a USB drive as you read this and I still have my old drive which contains most of the stuff on this drive as it was cloned only a week ago.


Any thoughts?

do a scandisk or similar.
its not unheard of for new drives to develop faults but ive never had the problem myself.

Yup I did that first thing, and it checked it as ok on a pre windows scan, its not a CLUNK you hear of a proper failing drive its just a click here and there, which makes me paranoid to start big bold projects on this machine without regularly backing up.

I'm doing something photoshoppy currently and editing a photo which seems to have resulted in a huge 80mb PSD file and I don't want to lose it and it is a PITA to keep backing up to the pen drives, well its not a PITA its just troublesome.

You are 99% worrying too much but then again if it is worth so much you don't want to lose it then you should back it up anyway.

You know I've got an iffy sounding drive in my laptop. Has been like it for maybe 3 years. Makes a clunk every 10-12 seconds, and I imagine its the heads bumping into either end of the wiper travel. I thought long and hard about it and concluded that it probably shouldn't do it, and that if it was gonna do it the manufacturers would probably have put rubber bumps stops in there. And that if they did that, over time the rubber would harden off and maybe that was what I was hearing. Anyhow, I didn't worry about it and use my NAS to store stuff I know I can't lose. But that said, it's not failed at all, and I use fsck on it regularly just to check, so I'm sure I'd be made aware of errors if they happened.

Also remember that most drive manufacturers will have a warranty, and it's normally a long one...

I'm concerned over my pc C drive ... use your drive maker specific tester .. run the short and long test .... may fix it for you if it fails any test .. although it did not fix mine ...
