Can you kick start a moped and run a without the battery connected and would the key have to be used. If you can it's a easy way to nick a bike.

You don't need a battery on most.

You do need a key on most.

The question applies to bump starting bikes just as much as kick starting mopeds.

The key is needed as the ignition switch normally controls the spark (e.g. no key, no spark).

On many small bikes, all you need to start them is a cross head screwdriver. Undo the headlight, disconnect the ignition switch block and the bike will start, battery or no battery.

Doesn't anybody use logic any more?

Why would manufacturers sell mopeds that can be started without a key? Mopeds are bad enough for theft without allowing them to be ridden away with no security measures at all.

We need a rating that says "If you had have thought about that you would have come upon the answer yourself rather than having to waste our time".

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It's not just mopeds. Many bikes will spark once the ignition switch block is disconnected. It's a common way of eliminating a faulty switch if you have running problems - disconnect it and if the problem continues, you know there's nowt up with your ignition switch.

Maybe bike theft isn't a big problem in Japan Surprised

My Chaly sparks when you un-plug the ignition switch. I would say it started, but it didn't.

No wonder mopeds/scooters are pinched so easy..

You do not need a battery to start it, you can use the kick start ... fair enough but you need the key. Or Undo the headlight, disconnect the ignition switch block and away you go Wink .

So what is the battery's needs is it just for the lights/ indicators/ horn and the electric start..

Quite a few small bikes only use the battery for horn, indicators and brake light. Headlight only works with the engine running. Older bikes that mostly is, particularly those with 6V electrics.

Most scooter ignition barrels control the steering lock and a basic two wire on off switch, both are easily bypassed using a few screw drivers.

The mosty effective way most scooters are protected is by having an immobiliser system that uses a transponder and sensor ring, so no key means no spark even if you gain access to the black box/ignition switch.

You can rewire the cdi unit to bypass the immobiliser but some bikes have monocolour cdi wiring, with those a knowldege of the specific bikes loom is needed.
