As my socket set is about 20 years old and 1/2 inch i thought i would buy some new stuff to go with the new torque wrench and just for working on the bike, so i found this in halfords, yes or no?, or is there somthing better?. What are the most common sizes on most bikes?. Opinions or recommendations pls.

Thnx

Perfectly good set for occasional use. Would probably need a few extra sockets - 21, 22, 24 and 27mm. Might be worth looking for a slightly larger set that includes the bigger size sockets.

My socket set is a Draper one, bought about 26 years ago, still going strong, gets used at least once a month, sometimes more. The metal box is battered, the plastic inner is still ok-ish. It is my pride and joy. Next to my Bull nosed rebate plain.

To elaborate on this, I'd go for the 150 piece set. I got mine for £90 last year, but you may have to wait a little time until the half price offer arrives to get it at that price.

Can't fault it.

I'd go for a decent six point wall drive socket set if you can find one.
I got the halfords pro twelve point wall drive socket set and was a bit disappointed. Consider the rest of their stuff no more than 'average' personally.

The only real problem with the large sets is you inevitably get quite a lot of stuff you rarely or never use.

Ive read about 6 and 12 but not sure on the difference , not sure what mu old ones are maybe 6 point.
G, do you mean like this set?

Ah now i understand why the 6 wall are better. Google is your friend.

Just to clarify for others:
https://images.solidcactus.com/autobarn/xxxw-sk-41711.jpg
The one standing up on the left is a 12 point, while the one standing up on the right is a 6 point. Generally 6 points tend to round nuts less

A standard socket pushes near the corners (six or twelve point), which is more likely to round corners.
A 'wall drive' socket has rounded edges which push on the flats of the nut/bolt, which means it should be much harder to round off and is easier to get already-rounded stuff out:

I have a 1/2" King Dick set that cost me £110 in 1985 that is as good as new. I also have a 1/4 drive Draper set bought at the same time that has lasted just as well.

Hi

Britool stuff is pretty good. Fair few other good makes (Facom, Beta, etc).

Down side of the large Halfords set is that half of it is A/F (imperial) and most of us will rarely use those.

All the best

Keith

I've found Draper Expert sockets to be virtually indestructible (I've had a good go a few times at destroying mine Laughing ). The 12mm socket in particular has had almost constant use for 20 years and is still fine.

I think buying a decent quality ratchet handle alone, and then getting the sockets you actually need, is quite a good idea. Saves having loads of stuff that just sits there doing nothing.

If you bought sockets as and when you needed them not only would it be a PITA but cost you an arm an a leg.

Not as expensive as buying a large socket set full of stuff you're unlikely to use (such as AF sizes if you don't work on anything with non-metric fasteners).

Gonna go for the britool set as it seems to have all the major ones i will need for the bike and the old stanley 40 piece set can still be used on the car or given to my son. although he will not know what to do with it lols. Give fair dues thew old stanley still has all its chrome and no rust.

But the imperial sizes are there if and when I buy something that uses imperial fasteners Wink

Fair enough. I've got a box full of AF and Whitworth sockets/spanners that I picked up for next to nothing at a boot sale. I've mainly used them on damaged/rounded metric stuff, but I may get something old and British next year, so maybe they'll get more use now.

Ive got that exact set, its ideal for bike use, only extras i bought were a set of 3/8 hex bits a 10mm spark plug socket and a set of ratchet spanners

Got pretty much everything i need now, and being as its in a smaller box, its easier to take just what you need for a job out the big toolbox.
Quality rebuildable ratchet, i`d recommend it, and those ratchet spanners are mint!

Not much you will buy will use A/F imperial. Buy an old British bike and it will probably use Whitworth.
