I've smoked some cigars casually over the past few years but have never really built up a collection. So I don't think I'm getting the full benefits as they have always been fresh out the box and not aged n a humidor to mature.

So I'm looking at getting a Humidor soon, a modest one that'll hold around 50 cigars, then start building up my collection.
I seem to prefer Robusto, Gran Corona and Churchill size cigars with a fuller flavour. I've never explored much outside Montecristo and Cohiba brands.

Just wondering if anybody else on here has a good knowledge of cigar smoking and could recommend me some nice stoggies to start off Thumbs Up

I also (sadly) have a whisky collection Very Happy At the last count I was up to 37 bottles of mostly single malts Shocked. Nothing too extravagant and I buy to drink. I've only got one bottle (I had two) that I plan to keep it's a limited edition of the independent bottlers "Alchemist" of a first release of Port Charlotte 4yr old, limited to 400 bottles. I've also got the distillers PC6yr bottled at 63.4%! Thats and interesting malt Laughing

My favourite one at the moment is a 21yr old Talisker, bott 1982 (my birth year) that I got for my 25th birthdday from the wife.
Got a couple of blends, a nice Johnny Walker Blue Label and a Japanese Suntory Hibiki 17yr blend.
Also a mention for Lagavulin 16yr, Highland park 18yr and Ardbeg 10yr these always seem to run out Laughing

Yeah Fawbish I was the same I've spent a lot of time browsing simply cigars Laughing
I'm looking forward to starting exploring the cigar world. I travel a lot so I cant resist not taking advantage of the Duty Free Very Happy it would be criminal not too.

You cant beat a game of poker with the lads, a nice smoky peaty malt (Lagavulin 16yr does nicely), and a good Cuban cigar that will last at least an hour Thumbs Up
We also had fairy cakes but thats beside the point, my wife had just made them and they were irresistible. She wasnt happy though they were for her gran Embarassed

Thanks for the name drops there, I've been researching them all now.

Especially interested in that Lagavulin, but a few of us have decided we'd like to try something lighter and perhaps more fruity (less peaty) at first, is there anything around 25-40 quid that you could recommend?

Also, Im personally wondering where the hell to start with cigars, I've got some of the basic info down, but I think Im literally going to order one cigar at first, just to have a week on friday. If I enjoy the experience, then obviously I'll invest more time and money Smile

Im just wondering what to get though. Cuban (insert sub-category) just seems so cliche Laughing

The Lagavulin is fantastic but, as you can see, I'm a bit of a peat heat. I love my whiskies big, peaty, hot and smoky. I swear to god that some of the big Islay ones, you feel like you could chew it.

Thats a good idea though if you are gonna start trying whiskies not to jump straight into a big heavy Islay.

I would suggest a bottle of Mortlach 16yr.

https://www.whiskyshop.com/Content/Products/Full/mortlach-16eeweb.jpg

It's Speyside but it does have a wee bit of peatyness and some sherry oomph to it so it's not too light. I'm not a big Speyside fan but it is one of the few that I have and like.

Single malts are split into 6 areas and they generally have a character according to where they come from;

https://fortscotch.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/600px-scotch_regionssvg.png?w=574&h=576

Lowland:

These are very light, flowery and grassy. Not many in production and apart from the bigger distillers are quite pricey. Auchentoshan is the only one that still triple, rather than double, distils it's malt's making for a lighter flavour.

Highland:

Hard to pin down an exact style for this region as is covers a very large area geographically. Certainly heavier than the Lowlands but not as strong or peaty as an Islay. Bit of an all rounder.
I gave out miniatures of Aberfeldy 12yr at my wedding reception Thumbs Up

Speyside:

Over half of all scotch is produced here but there is a surprising amount of variance in taste. Generally quite light but some can catch you out. Famous names such as Macallan, Arberlour, Glenlivit and Glenfarclas to name but a few. So you will always be spoiled for choice.

Campbelltown:

Used to be a massive amount of distillers here but sadly most have gone only 3(IIRC) remain. Never tried any from this area so cant really give a first hand account. The most prominent one would be Springbank and Longrow but it can get pricy.

Islands:

Main ones would be Highland Park (Orkney) and Talisker (Skye). HP has to be one of the best malts in the world (esp the 18yr). I seriously cannot get enough of it. Such an all rounder it has a bit of everything in it, sweet, smoky, peaty, yummy Very Happy Heavier than most but still very easy to drink.
I've got a few bottles of Talisker and one thing hits you when you nose and taste it. PEPPER!! It's such a spicy malt but surprisingly accessible.

Islay:

Heavy, peaty, hot, earthy, smoky. these are the big hitters of the whisky world. Dont be put off by what some people think and say. You have to try. You might love it or hate it, you never know. Lighter Isaly would be Bowmore not as peaty as Laphroaig, Ardbeg or Lagavulin but will give you a bit of an insight into Isay and the unique style. Ardbeg Uigeadial won best world malt but it is a very serious heavy beast (I'm getting some soon Very Happy )

Have a look on here https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/C-40.aspx for good deals and some tasting notes for whisky. I usually get all my bottles off of here Thumbs Up

Yeah I'm not sure where to start with Cigars either. I think a small inexpensive humidor is a must. That would probably make me buy more cigars and keep them for longer. Some good deals on 'taster packs' both Cuban and Non-Cuban. Dominican and Nicaraguan seem to have some nice flavours to them.

My old man loves Lagavulin... It's a bit too peaty for my tastes. If I ever have a bottle in, it's usually Royal Lochnagar. It's smooth as silk, yet it still has a little peatyness in there.

So many whiskies so little time Sad.
I've still got a few whiskies that I want to try but I'm spoiled for choice at the moment with the amount of new bottles coming from Ardbeg and Bruichladdich on Islay, also the Port Charlotte coming out year on year, it's hard to keep up Smile

I was once offered a dram of this in The Grill bar in Aberdeen

https://www.whiskygrotto.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/macallan55-natural-colour-lalique-decanter.jpg

But at £70 for a dram (25ml) it was a bit pricey! The bottle will set you back £9,000.

Whilst i'm all for cigars, i just cannot understand the appeal of whisky - even a sniff from a bottle gives me a piss-shiver, and i can't imagine ever drinking it for pleasure.

Still, each to their own and all that.....

There is some cigar geekery group on Facebook, if any of you are interested.

I joined it AGES ago, but I never actually read it since I gave up fags almost a year ago now.

If you're interested and on FB, then let me know and I'll find it.

I've never been a fan of pipe dreams ala BCF meets. But I would fuck a granny to be at such an event.

You are now my favourite BCF member, I cannot possibly think of a better scenario in life.

^^ If i can wear a stovepipe hat and a frock coat, i'll be there.

Here's a nice titfer, strangely he's pulling exactly the same expression i do when i smell whisky:

https://www.apparelsearch.com/Definitions/DEFINITION%20IMAGES/stovepipe_hat_top_hats.gif

I'll give the whisky a miss (a nicely warmed brandy will suffice), but happily puff my cigar and stroke my muttonchops.

Thumbs Up

Yeah think its time to get some things in stock , especially with the cold weather truly starting soon .

I have toyed on and off with whisky and don't mind it.My fathers side is from Isle of Arran so guess i should get more involved , never knew they produced Whisky there.

In doing the family history keep getting told someone was very prominent to do with White Horse whisky somewhere down the line but never looked into who or what but will do.

The only whisky i've really attempted to drink neat was Oban which my friend had a bottle of and i could drink that on its own and enjoyed it .Bottle of it somehow turned up at a lakeside bar in Slovenia, was a nice surprise.

Toyed with cigars too on a low level , friends dad gave me a big Don Ramos cigar that took ages to smoke , every few months i'll have a Villiger if i'm at a friends but not that often, good to try things though.

And hopefully, there will be a few of these getting handed around.

(Kinda looks wrong)

And then this will happen at the end.

SoCo is a nice liqueur indeed, but its kind of akin to having coca cola when talking about whiskies.

Though I suppose it is Whisky flavoured (or supposed to be).

My new fave drink when Im out (if wanting to get moderately battered) is to move on from the Cider to triple SoCo and lemonades. It doesnt kill you like voddy redbulls, or voddy slingers. Laughing

It doesnt even taste like alcohol for fucks sake - therein lies its beauty Thumbs Up

Unfortunately, it also comes up well and tastes exactly the same in reverse, even a sniff of it now gives me the urge to vomit.

Not so much of a cigar smoker, just the occasional Hamlet now and again. Sometimes pick up a couple of cigars when abroad as well.
Whisky, however, is a different story. Cool
I go into Robertsons of Pitlochry a few times a year and the choice is amazing. The guy Robertson himself is really helpful and a hive of information.
There was a distillery local to Pitlochry which was shutting down where they aged the malt in old honey caskets, I cant remember the name of the malt but it had picture of honeycomb on the case it came in. Robertsons bought most of the stock from them. I wish I had bought a couple now! superb.
I had a bottle of Laphroaig recently that I gave away because it was far too strong for me. As you will from my avatar, Drambuie, I could live on the stuff!! Thumbs Up
