Hi,

Having ordered a camshaft and head from the US it's just dawned on me that I might have to pay customs charges.

The value of the goods INCLUDING postage is about £70 ($111.74).

They will be sent by USPS so I might get lucky, but if not roughly how much will I have to pay to the taxman in total?

Cheers

Rowan

You will probably owe about £10 in customs charges but the carrier may charge you for paying that charge Laughing Parcel Force will charge £10 to give your £10 to customs Evil or Very Mad

Wait for a real answer but for starters I've brought loads from Europe, China and the States. Never had to pay a single fee, even for several complete exhaust systems. I always guess that If I do have to pay then it will be VAT + a charge for inspection + courier fees, so maybe VAT + £20?

This is based on me getting a $20 pair of shoes with $20 postage which worked out at about £20 maybe a little more(At the time) I was charged about £13 'Customs chargers' I rang up Customs to complain and they said there chargers where £3 the rest was parcel forces.

I bought a ring from the states when i went on honeymoon, one of the diamonds fell out and, as it had a lifetime guarantee, I sent it back to the jewellers to have the stone replaced, about 6 weeks after I had the ring back, I had a bill from fed-ex for an £85 import tax from customs.

The customs charges are a pain in the ass.

I have been through this with some make-up I bought from the US for my other half.

The order was about $100 including shipping. I then had to pay over £20 in customs and Royal Fail charges. IIRC it was £8ish import duty and the rest to Parcel Farce for the privilage of them paying the customs people.

The amount you pay is determined by the commodity code of the item, so for two items of the same value with different codes you will pay a different import duty.

Before this I have ordered CD's and the like from the US and never been charged.

Reading the Customs and Excise site suggest that the charges are VAT +£8 If the value is over £18.
