as many of you will no doubt have noticed it has been snowing quite badly for last few days and is fucking freezing.

now for my work i am a manager at pizza delivery chain, as well as ride scooters to deliver pizza's every once in a while.

last year 2 scooters were crashed due to black ice/ice/snow and yet were told to use an uncrashed scooter afterwards(i crashed one of them, only suffered a bruised shin and thigh)

now tomorrow i am working, on the scooter, for 7 hours, have told the boss a few days ago that the weather will be shit and that he should probobly find people who can cover the shifts if the weather is rubbish.

got told tonight to come in and see how it is, now i know the roads will not get better as i live next to a primary school which always has the roads gritted so its usually ok here, the roads are like an ice rink as not gritters have been out at all tonight.

now if i say i refuse to go out in this weather i will no doubt get a bollocking (even though hq has told people not to go out if its bad as crash damage costs more than selling food brings in)

chances are i will get reduced shifts due to standing up to him Sad

anyone know of any laws or regulations that i can use to get out of riding on shit roads for hours on end? if i crash and get injured, would i be able to get them into shit? or would they just tell me i was stupid for going out on two wheels?

On your first delivery, jump off the back of the scooter as it flies into a wall, then blame the snow and ice.

Just ask for a copy of the risk assesment he has done. If you get one go out, safe in the knowledge comp will be paid. No assesment, can't ask you to go out...

Yup.

Standard H&S rules, you and they have aduty to ensure your safety, that process starts with a risk assessment. H&S is usually a pain in the arse, turn it back on itself and rub their faces in it for a change.

I've already come off once on black ice, first accident on the bike so fuck knows what the rest of the winter has in store, I bet I'll not be able to go out with out crashing it now... Mad

The council gives us 'training', we then sign a bit of paper. If we have an accident in an environment or with equipment we have had 'training' on, they're arses are covered and the blame lands squarely on US.

When I first joined the council I thought a lot of the men were just taking the piss when they refused to work for Health & Safety reasons but we, in turn, have to cover ourselves... it means very, very few of us take any 'risks' at work. I know what it may look like and sometimes it takes a bit of courage but if you're unhappy with the likelyhood of an accident occuring and the severity of personal injury that could occur, you are bang within your rights to refuse.

If you fuck yourself up on the bike, don't expect any thanks or compo. I really would avoid this shift, there's no medals at Pizza Hut, let one of the mugs be the hero.

Simply apply the 'Do i get paid enough to do *insert dangerous activity here*?' litmus test.
If the road conditions where you live are anything like it is round here, it would need to be an extremely well-paying pizza place to get me out on a ped in this weather.

What he said.

The bosses care only for one thing, the bottom line.

I bunked today as I just don't fancy being told "do the best you can" despite the obviously ridiculous road conditions. They are ok sat back in the warm office, arses covered by H+S, telling the customers "oh, its on its way, I've no idea what could have happened". It's you who will be taking the risks and causing a mess.

Then they can just leave you hanging in the breeze when you make a cock up. No thanks.

They can't dismiss you, as long as you are being 'reasonable'. I think that is the word they use.

Is attempting to deliver pizza's in 4-6 inches of snow on 2 wheels, reasonable?
