I've always had a topbox on every bike I've owned, just found them really useful for carrying stuff - shopping, leaving helmet in etc. I've always preferred the look of a bike without a top box though but practicality wins every time!

However, do you think there's a higher chance of being injured in an accident if you get knocked off and have a top box attached to the bike?
I'm always concerned that if someone slams into the back of me the first thing I'll notice is the top box breaking my back! Shocked

There is a much higher change of being injured with a top box on your bike, because without one if you're shunted from behind, the bike just slides through your legs and away. With a box on, it takes you with the bike. I know because because it happened to me once. A car coming the other way ran over the bike, and I glanced off the side of it. Was lucky not to go under the wheels with the bike.

For a long time after that I didn't have a top box on a bike, until it became unavoidable and I had to risk it again.

But I think the usefulness of a box outweighs the risk. I like a nice big one that you can stow all manner of stuff in Smile

Heard a rumour of this somewhere - guy got back-ended at ~40mph.

He was wearing a back protector, and it was in half, but his back was ok Thumbs Up

I've never considered the possibility of it holding me on/under the bike though - shame too as i'd been considering one (again for the practicality) up until now. If i crash again, i don't want my 210kg bike ontop of me when i hit the ground.
