Is this serious?

There is a groove in the piston, the ring goes in the groove like a circlip.

Hardly a brick wall Laughing

Not certain on this but if I had to guess I'd put the bevelled ring in the top groove and the ring with the tiny step in the outside endge in the bottom groove with the step lowest. The step is probably for scraping oil down the bore.

If only one of the rings has a chrome finish , that will always be the top one.
If either ring has the word 'top' etched into it, that is the way it is fitted, not where it is fitted.

The stepped ring will be the lower compression ring and the step will face downwards towards the oil ring.

Examine the top ring. The INSIDE edge should have an angle cut into one face only. On the top ring this chamfer will face upwards. The chamfer is usually present on both bevelled and unbevelled rings (where the bevel is on the outside).

If there is no inside edge chamfer, then use the stepped ring as your guide in positioning the top ring. It will have one side cleaner than the other, position the top ring in the same way, ie if the top side of the secondary ring is the cleaner one, then fit the cleaner side of the primary compression ring facing the same way when on the piston.
