rev counter's reading wrong.

the rev counter was fine the other week..

i rode down to norwich from cumbria (about 300 miles) then it suddenly started playing up.
as soon as i turn the ignition on the rev counter shows 3000 revs, (without starting the engine) even when its idoling at 1500 revs it shows 3000.

anybody got any ideas?

help much apprectiated.

What bike is it? Some newer bikes use the rev counter to show error codes from the engine management system.

He has a hornet, which has a rev counter I know nothing about unfortunately.

Could just be the cold, making it stick?
