(Badly) Blowing Exhaust

So I bought a VFR400 recently, not got a license yet or an MOT.

Anyway the exhaust link pipe is in a bit of a bad state, it's cracked quite badly so some water escapes and mixes with carbon leaving black crap dribbling down the exhaust pipe.

What would people recommend, I can't use exhaust gum because it's a real tiny gap between the pipes so it needs welding or a new link pipe. I really wouldn't mind paying for a new link pipe, but sourcing one that'd fit is a nightmare. It's got a Venom exhaust on it, I'm guessing any link pipe meant for a VFR would work with the can?

Can you not just pay someone to weld it up?

it's got a few little holes other than that big crack, so welding is an option but how hard would it be to source a new one?

Got a mate in notts who might be able to weld that up for you for a few beers, is the bike mobile or will it have to be done at yours?

Did you get cbt sorted in the end? got your test booked?

Hey Ben

I got my CBT done, beacon were great. Not booking test until I'm back home for spring or summer, want to do it in Notts rather than Newcastle but I'm not here all that often until Summer. Gonna do it with Full Throttle as sold the car to get the bike so can't get far (have to rely on lifts).

I'll probably get it done after I pass, the bike can't really move to far. Once passed and insured I'll have to take it straight for an MOT, so if he's not far out the way I could nip on the way to get it welded then straight to MOT?

It's already got some exhaust gum by the previous owner, but obv the crack has worsened so it needs welding, could it be a pain with the gum in place?

How could the gum effect an MOT? I'm not sure what it is, how hard would it be to source new link pipes do you think? I mean would they have to fit a Venom exhaust or would any old link pipes (for a VFR) do?

The gum can be raked out before welding, if its welded properly it shouldnt crack 5mm either side, mate has some stainless welding rods too. Hes up on mapperly top, so not a million miles from you.

Good luck with full throttle, let us know how you get on, ive got my enhanced rider training booked with them, just got to wait for my license to come back from dvla (£20 for a new photo ) there a good bunch of lads and lasses. Oh and Tommy tuckers next door go for the special breakfast or if your brave the trucker ive never finished one yet

I'll take a note about that Ben and when I actually get round to doing it when I come back home I'll give you a PM on here and try get a time, date and price sorted out =]

I think I'll have a go at having it welded and if it doesn't go to well just hunt down some new pipes.

Apparently the guy I brought it off said there was another leak a bit further up the pipes which needed a bolt tightening as it'd "happened before". Needs a few things removing to get to though so I'll look at that before getting it done.
