Why is it that we can abbreviate the word British to Brit, the word Australian to Aussie, the word Scottish to Scots and the word Irish to the words Thick Paddy Bastards but we can't shorten the word Pakistani?

The average 'Paki shop' owner is Indian or Sri Lankan. That's what they have the problem with, by and large. India and Pakistan aren't countries known for their cordial relationship. It's like calling people from N Ireland Irish instead of British. Nonsense really.

There is real racism, of the kind spouted by those knuckle dragging morons from the BNP, and then there's people who call the local Chinese restaurant the chinky. Unfortunately it tends to be the latter who get hauled over the coals.

English is not a race, it's a nationality.

There is (or was) a shop in Glasgow called "The Paki Shop". Said so on the sign over the door.

I'm not sure why a shop should be categorised by the nationality or race (or not) of those running it, it's just 'a shop.'

People are overly sensitive about this kind of thing, that said, I tend not to refer to the chinese as the chinky or the shop as the 'paki's' as it's just a wee bit impolite, I definitely couldn't give the faintest toss about some random person's idea of what is and isn't PC though.

Thumbs Up

We have a convienience store in our village which up untill about three years ago was run by an Iranian family. Since then it has been run by a white English family but is still refered to as the ''Paki Shop''. To my knowledge it has never been run by anybody of Pakistani origin but it will almost certainly always be called the ''Paki Shop''. In my opinion the term is used simply as a means of identification and I don't believe that anybody uses the term maliciously.

In the West of Scotland (AFAIK) people still refer to Ice Cream Vans as Tally (Tali) Vans. Due to the fact that most of these were run by Italians. The name seems to have stuck and I dont think any malice is meant by it.

If we're not allowed to call a Pakistani a paki, does that mean we're not allowed to call a Scotmans a Scot, an Australian an Aussie, or a Frenchman a cunt?

We use Gentleman, IIRC Gentile where Gentleman comes from was a Jewish derogatory term for non Jewish, Also we use Viking which again was a derogatory term of its day for the invaders.
Paki IIRC means pure, so who can be offended by being called pure? Oh! I know, The Fucking Paki Bastards. ( term used as part of the joke and not to be taken as an offence)

Gentile isn't a derogatory term, it just means 'not Jewish'.

I don't think the average corner shop owner gives a monkeys if people call their gaff a Paki shop so long as they spend their money in there Laughing

It's like calling people from N. Ireland "British". They come from the United Kingdom, NOT from Great Britain.

Anyway, The Good Friday Agreement guarantees the "Recognition of the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, as they may so choose".

Agreed, they are Northern Irish, but how do you shorten United Kingdom down, it just doesn't go.

Saying that having lived, studied & now worked abroad.

Whilst living in France, anyone who spoke English, was English, they had no idea about Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Even if you were American, you were English.

Recently talking to some colleagues in Germany about foreign languages and English speaking people (apart from me) being crap at them. I pointed out that people in Wales spoke Welsh, however they had no idea where Wales was, they had never heard of it!

Political Correctness is getting out of hand, just like a lot of things in this country.

Definitely agree with (name here)'s post about Scot shorten for Scottish, "Paki" shortened for Pakistani.

However I think it's because "Paki" was used first stereotypically as an insult to members of mixed (can I say "mixed"? I thought it replaced "Coloured" race) race and so they banned it. Unlike Scot, where (I believe) was used legitimately for an abbreviation.

But it does boil my blood when they come over here, complain on about our country, protest to how it should be run in their way (usually religious) when they are living with all of our benefits. Which are mainly a lot better than other countries.

A lot of the population of the World have turned off Religion due to the explosion of Science. (Not all, but the rate in which people have moved off religion has increased)

I do not mind religion, I'm not religious, and can live happily with people that are. It's when they impose their religion on other people expecting us to be like them or be condemned.

(In some cases from the Daily Mail, Doctors offering prayers etc... I do believe that was taken too far, she meant well, but offended the patient. She shouldn't of lost her job.)

With some lingo, it is hard to keep up with the latest politically correct acceptable term, but I think a magistrate should make an effort.

Knowing whether someone would prefer to be referred to as handicapped, disabled, or differently abled, is one thing, but I think any magistrate should know that "paki" is offensive, as I think people can be convicted for using racially offensive language by saying it.

I recalled a similar thread (found it here).
From that...

Also see Wikipedia entry.

I also recall (but can't find it) someone on here making the arguement that the word PAK can be taken as a complement (as above, man of peace, etc.) but PAKI can't.

That said, IMO modern usage can be a term of derision or indeed just a term for identification.
When you have ignorant people here equating Sikhs to Muslim suicide bombers I begin to despair.

Paki is not the same as Brit.

Paki has always been meant as an offensive turn, wheras we call ourselves Brits.

Well, one could say they are Irish.

They are partly only 'British' because they are currently born and live in a UK owned and controlled land.

Before you pedantic sod's snap back on this, ancestrially it was Europeans who founded and populated the place.

Only a while later did Scottish and Englishmen settle there, so in majority people there are mainly Scottish in descendancy.

Which should be taken in context of 'people of Brit'; therefor they'd be 'people of Pak' - which as said wouldn't be an insulting term given it's interpretation.

If your mate called you a bastard, you might take it in good spirit. If a magistrate called you a bastard, you might think he didnt know you well enough to say that without it being insulting.
