After college today, i went to turn my fuel tap to the ON position, and suddenly the little lever came loose and fell in my hand! Surprised

I was pretty shocked, and tried putting it back in, i tried this for about 10 minutes, but no luck. I then realised that the Philips screw below the lever was missing, which holds it in place.

This is the whole fuel tap i have fitted, and that Philip screw in the picture is what i'm missing, anyone have any ideas what i shoud do?

There's no petrol leaking or anything like that, in fact, if i push the lever in i can use it like a key to turn the fuel tap to the ON, OFF or RES position, it just doesn't stay in, i rode home without the lever fitted, and it was fine, or is that a bad idea incase any muck gets in there?

I'd appreciate any help, thanks Thumbs Up

Hi

That looks like a Yamaha petrol tap.

I would be concerned that there is nothing holding the actual tap on the inside if the external tap has come out.

I suspect a new tap isn't that expensive, but also that you should be able to find a suitable bolt to replace the missing one easily.

All the best

Keith

The screw will be acting as a stop to prevent the cock from falling to bits and spilling fuel over a hot engine. It will be a screw with the thread removed on the last few threads not a stock screw. As said above replace it.

I rang up my regular motorcycle dealer, and he suggested a metric screw, and said he may have one, so i'll be popping in on Friday, because i'll be back there for the weekend.

I mentioned getting a new one, he gave me a price of one, which was £35, and to be honest, that's a rip off, when it seems like, all i need is a screw like 1930 Ariel said.

I'd rather give the screw a shot first, than blowing £35 on a new tap, when the one i have now works perfectly fine, it's just the lever that's popped out.

What is the screw called which has thread missing at the end?

Thanks for the replies Thumbs Up

I would put the tap to on and gaffa tape it all up so no bits can be lost until you get the screw, you wont do much harm keeping the tap set to on for a few days.

My bike hasn't had that lever on it since I had it. It confused me for a few minutes on the first day I had it trying to work out where the lever was before I realised it was missing.
Mines on reserve position and thats where it stays, Will sort it out one day but not a very pressing issue.
