I am thinking of getting a 05 GSXR , the prices and bikes look good, but have heard they are built poor, my bikes live in the garden and I am a bit worried it will rot away in front of me.

Definitely get a cover at least.

In my experience, sports bike from all manufacturers tend to have better quality finishes than more 'budget' models regardless.

Recently got an 06 GSXR, but not had it long enough to comment.

Their rep for build quaility has definatley improve but as said, get a cover.. I can't believe how, before, I would leave bikes out in kinds of weather... it just speeds up the ageing process x 10

These days, I try and avoid even wet roads....Rolling Eyes so am a bit a of a confirmed weekend warrior but don't get any buzz from riding in pissing rain.. have a scooter & 4 wheels for that which I leave in front of the house while my two ZX6s are kept in the porch all nice and dry Thumbs Up
