I had a new boiler fitted on Christmas eve due to my old one giving up the ghost.

I rang a plumber who is used by my inlaws' landlord to arrange a new boiler and fitting.

He fit it on christmas eve and charged a great price for me...

Been smelling slight gas since having the boiler fitted but I have just put it down to the smell of the welding/solder which he had done, but its just been there for too long now.

I rang National Grid emergency line lastnight, who were brilliant. Were with me in 20 minutes, but had to cut my gas off at the mains, so now im freezing my bollocks off.

These are the National Grid engineer findings...

-Major escape where the gas is connected to the boiler
-Incorrect washers used on connection
-Connection not tight
-Manometer not used therefore leak went un-noticed
-Benchmark form also not completed for the boiler
-Waste/overflow pipe is over the pavement (End terrace house) which is illegal

National grid said we are all lucky to be alive, and to be honest, im seething. They have also referred the incident onto the HSE due to how serious this is.

This said gas man is coming back today after a phonecall to him lastnight, to fix the mess he has made, and I am having another plumber out to check his work.

Now what I want to know is, if I call out another plumber to sort his mess, would I have a right to claim the costs back from the original cowboy? (Post christmas lack of cash being suffered)

Thanks for the help

Ash

I'd get in touch with CAB first thing, and I certainly wouldn't have the same cowboy back to sort it out!

Best way to check for gas leaks is light a fag and stand by the boiler if you hear a big bang and find yourself flying through the air then you were right, if you had the boiler fitted by a cowboy claiming to be corgi registered then you can check with them and they will advise you of a qualified gas fitter in your area and may also give help with getting compo from the original contractor to put any work carried out right.

CORGI registered is no longer the defacto standard. You need to check if they're registered on the Gas Safe Register. If it were me I'd make it a priority to get it sorted by SOMEONE ELSE and worry about the money situation afterwards.

Depending upon whether or not you like your inlaws, I'd consider getting any work that this individual has carried out for them inspected by a competent gas fitter.

Hi,

You need to report them to gas safe, they will also check work for free in some circumstances. (this may be more applicable to your in-laws on previous work than you)

You will be able to claim the costof restoration back of him, tranding standards can help.
Before you let him near the boiler ask to see his gas safe card and ring them to check, if he has been reported by Nation Grid he may be suspended.

I would use someone else, you only have to look at the explosion in Shewsbury to know you dont mess about with gas.

Regards
C

After he fixes his mess, clamp his balls.

Clamp them good.

Real good.

My parents had a similar issue, but not quite as serious. They had a new boiler and the small system pressure take was put upstairs. The overflow from this cylinder extended 2 inches from the back into thin air!
2 years later the failure of a valve lead to a trikkle of new water into the system, so the overflow started to bleed off the excess. This damaged 3 rooms of carpet, one large celling and the wallpaper of 2 rooms.
The house insurance covered it, and claimed all money back from the plumber, as well as a small amount of compensation for my folks.

Hopefully your plumber was insured properly and the CAB will help you make a clam.

Do you mean its dripping in the house from the condensate trap/pipework? if so it's very mildly acidic but not dangerous.
Still if it wasn't dripping before the plumber touched it I'd get him back to sort it out.

personally I wouldnt let the guy who fitted it within an inch of my front door! Get someone else recommended by BG, then go via CAB and get your money back from this cowboy......you don't make THAT many errors on a new installation without being a total cowboy.....

if by BG you mean britsh gas, they are a private comapany who will only reconend themselves, and are expensive.
The gas safe site will list approved gas installtion engineers in a given area.

National Grid/Transco are not allowed to recommend anyone.

Just make sure it's not leaking before the trap as you could then possibly get some combustion gases(flue gases) entering your house.
If it was fine before the plumber disturbed it, the condensate pipe probably just needs pushing/tightening back together where it joins onto the trap.
