Ok, moving from my show and tell thread as i need a hand.

I've rebuilt the engine on my 1985 BMW K100, and now it wont start.

It didnt run when i got it, so i dont know if there are any issues with the kit itself, but it does seem to be trying.

Basically, you press the starter, and the engine turns over, there is good spark, and you can hear the fuel pump running, and there is pressure to the fuel rail.

BUT, all i get is a few pops occasionally, then eventually a backfire up through the throttle bodies.

I have already checked that i have good sparks on all 4, the injectors have been sent away for cleaning, and so test ok. I know the HT leads are on the right cylinders, the coils are connected the right way round (According to haynes book of lies), and i have reset the ignition timing; according again, to haynes book of lies.

Now, my main thought is that i have cocked up the valve timing in putting it back together, but i suppose there are other possibilities.

Anyone have any ideas, or a guide of what to check first? should have time on new years day after my hangover clears to drain the oil out and recheck the valve timing. But a good work list would make me feel better about it!

[Edit] Have not managed to compression test it yet, as the tester i've got doesnt have the right adaptors - but it is in the post.

if its popping through the carbs your cam timing is probably wrong, or your valves arent lapped in.

Well, gave up with it because of the cold. Had another go this morning.

The valve timing might have been out by one tooth on the intake cam, but its spot on now. The ignition timing looks good, and everything seems to be on ok.

The leads are all connected, and in the right places, and all the vacuum points are plugged.

Still turns and turns, but doesnt fire properly.

The is a spark, and fuel at each cylinder.

Any more ideas? Thanks!

Maybe one of the old favourites, like a blocked fuel tank breather or dodgy kill switch?

Well, thanks for your help. I got fed up with it this morning, and went out. Seems my stepdad took that as an opportunity to take over, and apparently he managed to fix it with little more than 20 minutes, and a can of easystart.

Runs rough, but well. To be honest though, i'm pretty upset that after i spent three months working on it, it only took someone else 20 minutes to fix it, and i wasnt actually there to see it come back to life.

I want to go out and start it myself, but all of a sudden it doesnt feel like my project anymore. Just cant be bothered.

Oh well, thanks for your help guys.
