Hi

Neighbour is looking to buy a sports slowped soon, probably a Derbi GPR50. OK, I know that plenty of people don't think these are a great idea and they should save money for a bigger bike but I doubt they will get a bigger bike anyway.

Question is which of the sports 50's should be avoided. What particular problems do the various bikes have? How are they restricted?

All the best

Keith

Not a clue myself, but I'm sure scotty and co. over at www.sc-ooter.com might be able offer a greater insight than most here Smile And they might even tell you a list of recommended "mods" like carbon tax disc holder etc Smile

I would guess carb plates and possibly exhaust and some of the belt driven ones have something in there Confused

The GPR is a good one to go for, more reliable than the RS50 I believe. One of my mates used to have one and he said it did 65MPH derestricted (according to the speedo) which is pretty good for a 50cc. restriction is in the exhaust just like the 125's and maybe in the carb although i'm not positive about that.

The piston and rings also last a lot longer on the 50cc's.

SR50's are good, and get stupidly high mpg, cos its fuel injected, and there arent as many about as zips and typhoons

Im a bit sceptical about Derbi engines myself. Ive had to rebuild a couple, and even by 50cc standards the bearngs etc in them seem tiny.

They may be old, but the Suzuki TS50x i had when i was 16 was great. When i stuck on the 70 kit, with oversize carb, decent exhaust and a few hours spent tweaking the mixture, it flew. Well it flew compared to other 50's anyway Razz

Right well most scooters have restrictors in the exhaust.

Most lads go for the speedfight scooters they seem to be the most tunable of the lot these can be picked up 4 about 600 700 pounds second hand.

Hi

He doens't want a scooter, so we are basically looking at a Derbi GPR / Cagiva Prima (Mito 50), RS50 or a few others. Realistically he will be buying 2nd hand and the TZR will be outside his price range. PRobably going to be around a £1k to spare, maybe more. I don't mind doing some work to it to sort it out (pretty much expecting to replace the chain and sprockets, wheel bearings, brake pads and maybe tyres).

All the best

Keith

As you said about 125's almost all second hand 50cc's will be thrashed. Razz

Not a lot that can go wrong with a 50cc though, and parts are really cheap anyway (full piston kit for my ts50 is 20 pounds).

Just so long as its not making weird noises it should be ok! My TS50 has 32000km on the clock so it must be pretty bullet proof.
