My dad's 60th birthday is approaching soon (end of Jan) and I still haven't decided what to do for it or what to get him.

My initial thought was to buy him some gliding vouchers, but they are a bit of a rip off.
The best way would be to organise some lessons with a gliding club.
But then it's not such a great gift saying "i'll sort out some gliding lessons for you"
So maybe this in conjunction with something else e.g. like below.

The other option I'm considering is to take the whole family out for a big family meal to a nice restaurant.

I open the floor to suggestions.....

I don't see anything wrong with offering to get him some gliding lessons, obviously it's best not to actually book anything without his approval anyway so there's not much you can do beforehand other than check prices, availability and any conditions. Just get him a bottle of something and a card with the promise of some gliding lessons written inside, he'll be happy with that.

I'm not sure why you couldn't get him gliding lessons? I got my Dad some guitar lessons for his birthday, I called the instructor and booked some dates (I checked with my Mum that he'd be free) and then paid for them. I then simply gave him the dates and times that he would have to show up, he really liked it, didn't have anything physical to open from me but he still enjoyed it.

When my dad turned 60, I went shopping on Ebay and bought loads of stuff from the month and year of his birth.
Ended up with books, newspapers, magazines, coins, and a watch. Wrapped it all up in brown paper and string, wrote the address on it and printed out a 1940's stamp to stick on it.
He loved the whole thing.

Talk to his local gliding club they might do a first lesson gift. My other half's dad had one for his birthday last year. We all had a great day out and he got 3 winch launches and about an hour in the air.
he did it here https://www.cotswoldgliding.co.uk/

For his 60th, I got my Dad a rather nice bottle of expensive Champagne and a nice presentation box, a bottle opener, and a cork. He was chuffed to bits.
