So, got back from my first biker rally type thing. Andy and I decided to go to that Family biker bash that got posted here a while ago, the thing everyone listed as spam. I’m not sure what the general lay out is so ill start with a quick summary of what the weekend was about.
It’s a 3 day rally for bikers and families alike with all proceeds going to the chosen charity. This year it went to Diabetes UK. It was boasted as a fun weekend with good bands and a nice ride out to the new forest. So onto our travels
Thursday 3rd July. (Fareham to Maiden Bradley)
The original plan for Andy and myself was to get loaded up and leave at midday hoping to arrive around 5pm ish ready to pitch our tents at 6. This obviously failed miserably when we realised that taking the A roads on our 50cc bikes with my top speed being around 50mph and Andy’s 45mph. So we met at 9:30 ready to run into town for batteries, breakfast and spending moneys. Not getting home to load up until 11am and me faffing around led to us not leaving until 11:45. So we began our voyage neither of us knowing where we were going, who we would meet or if we would make it before nightfall. We set off to the end of our road and onto the A27. We shot up along the roads into Segensworth and toward Burseldon. After a wrong turn at a roundabout and some funny looks from some coppers as they passed us. We were back on track and heading through suburban southhampton. Up to Romsey along some gorgeous roads and a few boy racers overtaking with a death wish. We pottered along to the A36 where we stopped for lunch in a Texaco. The girl behind the till obviously adores her job as she didn’t even bother to look up as we came to the counter. So after our little panic about the A36 being a dual carriage way with Andy now being stuck at 33mph as his bike decided to be difficult we set off towards Salisbury. The A36 seemed to go on forever until finally we found a little round called the A350. I knew this would lead to Maiden Bradley but the map we had was scaled to show only major routes so we found it hard to find out where we were. To make life more difficult the weather turned…badly…suddenly the heavens opened and drenched us entirely. We zipped up and down country lanes trying to find out where the site was. We passed by it several times unsure if it was the site as only 1 tent was pitched. We gave in and randomly parker our bikes in a stone bus shelter in true pikey fashion. As luck would have it the organiser of the event was walking to the pub while we sheltered from the rain. He kindly asked us if we were here for the biker bash and we were directed to head to the field we passed several times that hour.
We pitched out tents and gladly got out of the wet. As the rain started to fade out we helped put up a marquee and some tables and chairs. At this time a group of bikers up from London arrived to pitch up. A GSX 1400, Two bandits, 600, 1200 and a Blackbird. This seemed to be our lot for the night so after a long day we went to bed.
Friday 4th July (General lounging around waiting for evening entertainments)
We started our day with a little trip to the village shop where almost everything was at least 20% cheaper than in the supermarkets. Anyways we helped set up some more stuff like electrics, kids tent and such. A slow day where we just hung around listening to some music. A fair few bikes turned up and pitched tent. Not as many had arrived as expected but it was still early days. Again random weather seemed to strike and the afternoon alternated with sunshine and showers so we sought shelter in our tents… I am ashamed to admit we missed the beer run so were distraught at our lack of alcohol. We moved over to check out some of the cruisers that had arrived and got chatting with a long haired guy whose name I’ve forgotten. We started to mingle with complete strangers and told the long haired guy about our trek up from Fareham. He was shocked and so impressed we gained unlimited access to his crate of carling . As his mates came over he told more people about us and we were getting offers of beer from about 5 people. The band, Howling at the Moon arrived and played a random smattering of songs and quite badly to. Oh well more beer! The night played out quite well and we went to bed.
Saturday 5th July (Going for the Ride out.)
So the night before Andy had gotten himself a ride on the back of a Harley where as I had yet to find someone to take me pillion. It fell to a Harley rider who had never had a pillion before and an oldish guy who didn’t want to take me. As I stood waiting the Old guy said Ill take him and I was relatively pleased to see I would be on the back of the blackbird. My god the power in it was amazing. He was at 110mph by the time I would be at 40. It was in immense ride and as he relaxed and trusted me not to counter lean and wriggle around in the middle of turns he started to be less gentle with the throttle and the cornering. It was an amazing ride. We stopped at a pub in the New forest for lunch. Good food although slightly over priced. The return journey was great as we went up the A31 as the weather turned once again to rain. This time the weather did not let up and the band was forced into the village hall which we bravely commandeered. Tents were ripped and soaked through and the kids tent thing started to fly away. So we soaked up some tequila, carling, red wine and some waaaay out of date beer. I mean out of date May’07 Back to the tent for bed time.
Sunday 6th July (Pack up and head home….Almost)
Goody, still pissing with rain and windy as f**k. Someone had the great idea of taking down their tent inside the marquee which was an excellent idea and many people followed suit. One guy brought his Hayabusa into the marquee to warm it through So Andy and I brought our 50ccs in and were obviously too cool as he soon loaded up and left. Now for the real fun. Andy’s bik don’t like the cold… and he broke his kick start…. Electric start failed… Wouldn’t turn over. So we spent 2 hours trying to find a phone to call his breakdown people after we tried jumping it from my bike.15 minutes after he called his recovery the b*****d thing started up. So 3 hours later than planned we packed up and left heading home. Which went quite quickly even though Andy had a new top speed of 20mph on the flats. All in all a good weekend (see below for Good/Bad points list) I would thoroughly recommend some of you guys and gals have a ganders next year. The dates are 10th,11th and 12th of July.
Good points:
Rock doctors were a great band
Everyone was really friendly and open
Free beer from everyone else
Got a ride on a 1100cc bike
Great ride up there
Excellent village shop with a lovely woman who helped us pick some cheese for our bread
Excellent atmosphere
Bad Points
Sh*te weather which led to a lot of people not turning up
Howling at the Moon not that good a band
Not that many people being there

Hi Joe, thanks for coming along to the weekend and giving it a good write up. The weather really did let us down this year which was a shame, so much for global warming!! Fingers crossed we'll be even better organised next year (this was good compared to some of hte previous) and hopefully the sun will shine on us and we'll get a far larger turn out. See you around Nigel (Harley rider). |

To anyone who may read this,
The family biker bash was well worth the ride and the weather up there and i would recommend it to all of you to go on up next year. You wouldn't belive how friendly everyone is up there considering we knew no one it was surprising how many people spoke to us. Plus the ride-out to the new forest was amazing not only because i got to go on the back of a harley Davidson . But to any one who reads this i would advise to all of you to come up next year. |

This is myself and Nige- my other half whose Harley you went on, oh and he's had me as a pillion many times just think suzy confused joe with the other Harley bloke!! I was suprised you didn't enjoy Howling, i thought they were good but didn't play for long enough. Nige says he doesn't think they were heavy enough! Depends what you like i guess. Anyway glad you and joe had a good first outing, and eventually managed to get home! :lol:You're very welcome next year! |
