Its hardly an ideal bike to get on for the winter after riding a 125.

I recently decided to upgrade from my NSR125R to a 33bhp bike, but i couldn't find a faired 500cc (i wanted fairing for dual carriageway/motorway travel, and rain etc) for the right price (i.e. about as much as i could sell my NSR for!). Most kawasaki gpz500s and CBR500f bikes were too expensive (£2000 for a half decent one). I then found a 1993 yamaha xj600s in a bike shop for £1295, haggled them down to £1150, got it restricted and it's great. Faired, reliable, comfy bike with a great pillion seat, smooth as silk engine and a piece of piss to ride in all weather. It is 10 years old but had only done 5600 miles when i got it, it's now at 7600 (after 5 weeks) and i've had no problems except for a small oil leak which will be sorted tomorrow. Insurance is cheaper than my NSR!!

OK, so it's not cool but it'll run and run and run and can put on some speed when u need it.

Perfect for winter.

Restrictors are gay. Well, actually, I doubt they have any kind of sexuality, being small pieces of machined metal. Restrictors are annoying, but not as annoying as riding an NSR when you've passed your test, but would have to wait 2 years to get full power. At least a 600 sounds and feels good, restricted or not.
