On the drive to work this morning I saw a Police scooter, all decked out in the livery with a uniformed officer riding. Would love to have gotten a better look but as he was waiting to pull out of a side junction I didn't get chance.
What exactly is the point of these? Surely they can't give chase in a pursuit, and they don't allow for much equipment to be carried. I don't see any reason why they would use these over a regular motorcycle! Anyone else spotted these around?

They get around on bicycles too, and on foot. It's simple, cheap transport. Not all police are traffic units or panda cars looking to give pursuit, some of them are doing police work like patrolling to prevent crime.

I'd rather see my tax money being spent on a £2000 scooter with low running costs than a £10,000 car with higher running costs.

The police closed two lanes on the A406 last year after they shot a man. This caused tailbacks for miles around. When this was going on I saw 4 or 5 police on scooters. They were using them to filter through the traffic when it was at standstill.

Tell you what, its funny to see a fat copper in full leathers riding one of those things.

Filtering through traffic I can see as a benefit - but just for patrolling? I'd rather my tax money be spent on a bicycle, or some sturdy shoes, than on a scooter! The bicycle performs the same task, but without the fuel and running costs - after all a scooter is no replacement for a police motorcycle.
I wondered if they were part of the plan to appeal to "yoofs" of the area... however if that's the case then I can just see them getting stolen.

They're pretty common on the continent, especially in spain. Though, they get guns there, which makes them a bit more menacing Smile.

Best I saw was a cop on a knackered c50 or something in Tunisia with a totally flat back tyre about to come off the rim.

As robby has already said that is not what they are trying to do, they are a form of cheap reliable transport to get them somewhere quicker than walking or on a push bike.
