Trying to track the history of a Land Rover.

I bought a Land Rover of a mate of mine about 16-17 years ago and it had Royal Navy Livery on it. I've recently found out it is one of only two known that had livery and now I am trying to find out some history on it but it's hard going as there are no records easily available.

HMS Invincible is mothballled at the moment so there are very few people on there. You could try here:

https://www.rncom.mod.uk/Advice_Desk/AdviceDesk.aspx

and here is the best RN forum for the UK, definitely worth looking at and will probably have some people who served on her then:

My cousin was on the Invincible for a few years I think, around 2000, he used to maintain harriers. Not sure that it is any help mind Laughing

Truslack

I already have the unit history for it. What we need to find out is why there was a liveried Land Rover at all. There are no known photos of it in service and it turns out Military Vehicle historians have been searching for it for some time, it was believed to be some kind of forces myth that it existed.

The only way it seems we will find out the why of this vehicle is to speak to people who were onboard at the time.

Imperial War Museum...IWM.ORG.UK...

Pup, the other half reckons you may have a bit more luck with that link as I've just spoken to her about it and that's the one she suggested as they'd have more extensive archives...

She's also suggested it may have been to ferry dignitaries from whichever port it was stationed at to the ship and back...Royal visits and such...Also it may be liveried if it was ever stationed in or around Hong Kong as they make a big thing of it over there, so it may have been a show vehicle if you like, or it may have just been to move things around the port it was at at the time and that's it...

What's the actual Livery on it ?...Just Royal Navy, or a coat of arms ?...And if it is a myth that only two were done as you've mentioned surely a phone call to the above should raise someones ears if it's that notable...

I'm getting curious myself now ( More so than who got the Queen Vic ) so find out ffs and let me know Laughing ...

Do you know its purpose? Obviously not operational, could it be related to recruitment, or a specific publicity stunt? Some sort of charity thing funded by Invincible, or her crew at the time?

Just throwing a few ideas out there, may be avenues to look down,

Dignitaries and the Captain are one of the suggestions. It never made it to HK and it would seem strange for a vehicle being used as a run about to be liveried although it is of course possible.

The Livery is simply ROYAL NAVY on the removable upper of the rear tub.

Will do.

In a nutshell this is what we are trying to find out.

The Land Rover was also attached to HMS Hermes at the time it was being decommissioned.
