hi. my dad has asked me to look for a bike he used to have back in the day. he went to the south of france on it with my uncle before my uncle broke his neck and i think he wants to re-live his youth abit. the bike is a suzuki 850 shaft driven and he had a micron alpha exhaust on it. he thinks it was a gs850 and was late 70's early 80's.

does anyone know of one of these bikes or exhaust? if so i would be interested in knowing more about it

thanks brett

It was a GS850G. A bit of a bruiser of a bike.

I've ridden a couple, seat like an armchair, lots of low down torque.

One of the ones I rode had to have the shaft drive/rear wheel gearing rebuilt at great expense.

The same bike fell over in the mud at the Kent Custom Show. Unfortunately it fell on top of it's owner who was asleep in his tent at the time.

I tried to ignore his cries for help cos it was nice and warm in my sleeping bag, but he made such a fuss I had to go and drag it off him in the end. Took the both of us to get it upright once he'd got out of his flattened tent, light they are not!

It's not a G, but might be enough to give him a pang of nostalgia.

I'm like a broken record...but that's a proper bike. Vote for me as prime minister and all bikes will look like this...or fairly similar Laughing

I had a GS1000G for a while. Bruiser is accurate. First bike I had seen with a gear indicator light on the dash. Got stolen from directly opposite the main police station in Reading Sad

Hi

From memory, Alpha was the cheap and loud brand of exhaust from Codnor Light Fabrications (people who also made Micron exhausts).

All the best

Keith

The old GS 4s were proper muscle bikes. Bikes it took a bit of skill to hustle fast round twisties. Bikes that looked like bikes, not some demented piece of modern art (like the hideous Hayabusa).

Bugger me, I think I'll buy a GS750/850/1000 for next summer Thumbs Up

Mate of mine had an alpha exhaust on his DOHC CB750.

Fuck me it was loud! Had a real growling quality to it. Sounded almost civilised at tickover though. That was an evil brute of a motorcycle too.

I agree, that and the naked CB1300 Honda are still selling right now:

https://www.mcnews.com.au/NewBikeCatalogue/2003/Honda/CB1300/CB1300_Black_RHF_700p.jpg

Slightly more modern but I'm sure it's still just as fun.

i have to admit i do prefer the faired versions of those two, i think it's the clocks visible above the headlights.

i don't know why it puts me off 'em it just does, probably cause i think they should in the headlamp nacelle.

OK, they're heavy and not overly quick. Maybe you could slate it for being slightly less nippy in the corners than your average DFS sale special leather sofa, but if nothing else the GS thou (regardless of chain or shaft) had a metric fuckton of torque. Enjoyed mine while I had it, not often I'll say that about a Suzuki Laughing
