Today I attached taller screen(+145mm) and it was really nice.
I always wonder why original screens of any bikes are so low.
Are they
-for cost reduction
-for how it looks
-for max speed figure
-for sales
(want to sell many after market parts at bike shop)
-Bribe from after market parts makers

But from customer satisfaction and ECO views, they should attach taller screen from the first don't they?
I think most of bike owners change screens to taller ones because the original ones are too low.

For sports bikes it's all about the looks I think - a 'double bubble' screen doesn't really fit in with the looks, though you will see one on the team's race bikes, it'll make it faster and more comfortable to ride.

I personally think double bubble screens look good and I'd like one on my TZR for the look and the extra wind protection.

I did back-to-back testing on the runway with my 'busa to check the speed difference for stock screen vs double-bubble.

Stock: 194mph
D-B : 194mph

But were you right on the tank for that?
Majority of the time even for circuit racing somewhere like Snetterton I wouldn't get as low as I would trying for a top-speed run.

Probably they design them for the best handling in cross wind conditions.
With a big screen crosswinds are really annoying.

So you are saying they both slow you down?

A certain amount of wind on your head helps take weight of your wrists.
The only time I fitted a taller screen I didn't really like it although on long runs it maybe meant less stress on your neck and shoulders.

Yes, on a seaside motorway, crosswinds affected me. But now I have frame mount screen and it was better than handle mount type.

Yes I thought the same thing when I first rode mine. But TDM isn't so racy position, so when I did high speed 200miles, my neck was being chopped and caused neck pain.
With normal screen, I had to take position as if I ride CB400SF but with taller one, I could ride with more relaxed position with no problem.
And I found that bikes like ZR-7, DL1000 etc which screen and rider's head position are not close usually cause air turbulence.
I notice it reading threads in Japanese bike boards.
With upright position bike, it seems to be a difficult thing to make tall screen without turbulence. They will be huge screen like BMW RT or Goldwing.
TDM had a little bit forward position compared to DL1000 etc, so luckily there wasn't turbulence problem with taller screen.
But regarding racy position bikes, rider's head and screen are closer, thus less air turbulence.

The standard screens are all about looks and I put a tall flip screen on my ZRX1100 as it was a bugger for wind blast at higher speeds and it transformed the bike . . . . . To something that was impossible to ride anything over 75mph due to buffeting. It made me physically sick it was that bad. After heating the screen and removing the flip it was perfect and took all the wind blast off my chest and removed the buffeting.

My R1150GS was the opposite with it's standard screen without the flip, I got buffeted but adding the flip stopped it. The MRA vario screen was best of both worlds and made the bike easy to ride with the visor up at Motorway speeds.
