When checking the oil level on a bike with a threaded dipsick, do u have to screw it back in or just place it in but not screw it down to get a correct reading, my bike is a honda cbf 600 and it does not state the correct way in the manual, also it is better to check when cold or warm , thanks in advance for any advice given.

Check when warm after leaving it to stand for a few minutes. get the bike upright and check the level by just dropping the dip stick in rather than screwing it.

Its always bets to let the bike run for few min to get up to temperature then place the bike on its center stand or just keep it upright. For my CBR 600F my manual says not to screw in the dipstick when testing.

Yes, just sit it on top after unscrewing and wiping.
I should think there is little difference in whether its hot or cold.
Keep it on the higher side of medium when its on its centerstand/level.

My owners manual says the same thing - however, tested both ways there's very little difference in the oil level shown, really - probably the difference of adding less than a quarter of a pint, so unless you're running really low anyway, I doubt it's likely to make a critical difference

Remember to run it for a couple of minutes then let it stand for a few more minute to allow the oil to drain out of the head back to the sump for measuring.
