bought an mx-5 a week ago and just installed a cd player and for some reason it will only work if the lights are switched off. if i put the cd player on then turn lights on it just switches off completely.

any ideas what could cause this?

Dodgy wiring behind the dash, presumably the same happened to the radio you replaced if there was one. Take it out and check the wiring, check there's no dodgy taped up bits, possibly somebody has linked the radio wiring with something in the light switch for some reason.

Since it's an MX-5, the CD player will only play Fun Boy Three with the lights on.

that would probobly be our fault, basically the connecting blocks didnt match up so we took the wires out of the blocks and connected them up by hand, must have got one mixed up or perhaps not connected tightly.

Sounds like the interiour light circuit (the one that lights up all the bits on the dahboard) is shorting something out..

Attack with multi-meter until problem found....

it came with that, it however would not connect with the leads that came from the cd player unit.

iv'e redone the speaker units to be more secure and thats fine, moving onto the power one tomorrow.

unsure if it will have anything to do with interior lights as there arnt any that i can spot, theres two small ones but there not wired up as far as i can tell.
