Quit smoking about 3 days ago, really bad cough now, hurts lots, tried various throat numbing things but it is really bad so I started again lol
Mainly because of the cough and after 1 fag, it has gone.

What methods do you have of overcoming this, I mean it is every 10 seconds a rough horrible unpreventable cough. If I breathe heavily or anything it gets worse. What can I do to overcome this or do I just put up with it till it goes?

I packed in about 6 months ago because my chest was becoming rediculous. I was wheezy really badly and coughing so hard I could have brought up oil. It got worse when I packed in though but it doe's eventually ease off and gets better. Just stick with it.

It happens.
Go see your doc if you want. They might give you an inhaler though.

It'll ease and be gone in a month. Like the other fella said, see your Dr if you need to.

I suppose you could also consider cutting back on smoking slightly more gradually. If a single cigarette a day helps with your coughing to begin with (and obviously with the rest of the withdrawal) then do that. After a while cutting out just the one a day will probably be easier.

Not that I would know though, I've never smoked and never tried to quit. Just think of the money you will save though!

I was "lucky" in that I quit when I had flu - I didn't have the lung power to draw on a ciggy without coughing my spleen up. That way I managed to have the lungs clear themselves of all the shit in one session so by the time the flu was over, I'd missed the additional lung clearing.

A good chemist should sort you out with something.

Its worth it in the end Smile

I was about the same as Shaggy, just coughing the remains of a chest infection, so I didn't really notice that, although I was expecting it, as I had heard from many people that this would be the case.

What I HAVE noticed though is that it took several months to get rid of a kind of "chalky" feeling in the back of my throat. I originally put this down to my house having quite serious damp in the hallway, but I have now realised that in fact, its the ash in the atmosphere.

My chalky throat returned over Christmas when both Anita and Andy were here, and has now gone again, now that they're more or less buggered off.

But also keep in mind, there's a wicked bout of tonsillitis going about at present. I had it last week, I swear I woke up two nights on the trot feeling as through my throat was coated in barbed wire. I was frightened to even swallow some water to rehydrate, cos it hurt so much.

So it might be that.

Smoking a fag will not make you better, the cough is just a part of the withdraw kicking in.Just ride it out, quiting smoking is the best thing you will ever do.

I am quit over a year now, went cold turkey. Wish I never started them in my teens but quitting was the best thing I ever done I feel so much better and I never got that cough, which was weird. I got the cough when I tried using the patches before that, I was so ill from them, flu after flu and cough etc ! made quitting seem so hard thats why I failed on patches. . Cold turkey FTW! I felt crap for a while but got over it.

This is where the classic "I felt better / Was healthier when I was smoking" line comes from.

Your bronchial tubes (throat etc) are lined with small hair like things called cilia.
In a smokers throat they are stunted or even smooth.
As soon as you give up they start growing back again and are prone to infection. Hence you get sore throats and coughs easier.

To quote a random medical website:
" Remarkably though, smoking cessation can undo the damage to cilia rather quickly. In fact, the cilia begin to repair themselves and regenerate in number within only three days after quitting. It should be noted that coughing is a common side effect to this process and may last from a few days to several weeks. "

This reminds me .. I really must give up soon !

My mum had this problem. She quit after smoking for about 45 years and did nothing but cough and wheeze for 18 months afterwards. She's always had asthma but this was chronic.

She has been diagnosed with COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but it's only mild at the moment. Think emphysema if you're not sure what that is.

On the plus side, she feels tons better for not smoking, is wealthier (same as my dad who had smoked for over 50 years and was at 60 a day by the end!) and now attends an NHS fitness clinic for people like her and is fitter too. Her and my aunty (very severe asthmatic) are the only ones there not with their own oxygen cylinders though, so she's thankful she stopped when she did.

It's normal, but go to the docs anyway.

I've stopped for the second time now. Been stopped since the start of December (managed to stop for 18 months last time).

I'll tell you what I did wrong. It is the easiest thing in the world to think of a reason to have just one fag. The excuses build up, then you're smoking again.

For me it went:
"I'll just have one late at night round the fire when I'm drunk at club runs." (about 5 weekends a year)
"I'm allowed to smoke on club runs."
"I'm allowed to have a one once I get home then nothing through the week."
"It's been a stressful day, I'm allowed one when I get home."
"No smoking at work."
"Ahh shit, I'm on 20 a day again."

I slipped once this time round so far. Had a fag after I crashed the bike. It's a good excuse but it's still an excuse. I'd have been better with a sugary drink.

If you are serious about stopping. No fags. Not even one. Coughing is just an excuse.

I quite before south africa, telling myself I'd rather be a non-smoker around smokers then vice versa. Not too arsed if I started up again mind.

Lasted two weeks Laughing

'Well I'm really drunk, I'll pinch one off her while I enjoy my last beer'
'Ok, you can smoke when you're drunk'
'Ok, you can smoke when you're drinking'
'Right, it's 9am and I want a cigarette... time for a black label'

That was about when I gave up Laughing

I don't think my will power not to waste money will ever be compromised by a substance addiction. Saying that though, the amount of money I've spent on bikes......
