I'm off to view a '92 CBR400 tomorrow, what do I need to keep an eye out for? It looks fairly well looked after, some sensible mods & upgraded parts, but I know jack sh!t about bikes.

It's a 20 year old bike, and one that is more likely than most to have been ragged to redline by it's many young owners.

Best to take someone with you who knows about bikes. Other than that the usual checks you do with any used bike, like downpipes, forks suspension, brakes, head bearings etc. It's a Honda, so I'd guess the Reg Rec likes to die at some point.

I take it you've previously scanned 400greybike forums if your into that sort of thing?

Also make sure you check the exhaust collector box, i know from experience that they love to rot through on the old honda 400's

The standard reg/recs on them are fairly poor and prone to failures, test the bike headlights aren't flickering and it doesn't cut out when switched to high beam.

Also original exhaust headers and collection box as mentioned are mild steel so prone to rust.

Worth enquiring if the bike is speed restricted also as a grey import it will have been originally and possibly still so, restrictor limits it to 110mph removal/modification allows it up to 130.

thanks folks - went to look at it with one thought in my head "be sensible". That flew out the window as soon as I saw it. Anyway, all the comments made seem fine with the bike - it's got an R6 reg/rec (apparently the best solution to failing ones), new headstock & wheel bearings, exhaust looks great, ticks over lovely no noises, appears to be a well looked after bike. So bought it. Very Happy

Yep went on the 400 forum for bit of advice too. cant wait to ride it now, need to sort insurance then I'm away.
