Hey all,

Early January I went through a pothole (the car), about a metre long half a metre wide and 25cm deep, and the impact bent both left hand wheels in about half an inch and the tyres completely ruined.

Took pictures and enquired via email into how to claim off the council and a little further down the line I have received an email from the council's insurance representative and several pieces of paper with information of when road inspections were carried out.

The road was last inspeccted in October and the incident happened in January.

Can anyone help with how to procede from here? For example what are the timescales that they have to inspect the roads or respond to the pothole alert for it to be legal.

Any help would be absolutely amazing and if any money is won through your advice I will pay.

Cheers,

Jack

I know form the fact that the road has been inspected they have known about it, just havent fixed it, meaning you can claim.

When i have had to claim before, I have rang to the companys insurance section, filled out lots of paper work, then they offerd an amount.

I assume you have kept reseats(sp) of the new wheels and tires?

You could also try using the map on fillthathole.org.uk to see if it has been reported, but I think that site only shows problems which have been reported through their site.

this might give you some info about claiming..

https://www.potholes.co.uk/claims/how_to_claim

you can normally claim anyway but if they've inspected it (normally leaving it circled) and then you've damaged yourself or your vehicle its a bigger issue and in most cases very cut and dry in your favour.

its basically a case of, by circling it, they've accepted responsibility for it and if you have an accident because of it they've already accepted liability as its their responsibility it gets fixed asap.

im on a major 'drive' (excuse the pun) at the moment at one of the roads by my house is in an awful state. at one end 3+ potholes have opened up (and various ones 'fixed' in a fashion previously) and at the other end most of the road surface has gone and the entire road is covered in gravel from halfarsed workmen throwing gravel about thinking it'll magically fix the problem.

i dont dare go down there on my bike anymore which is a MAJOR pain in the arse as going the other way round means i have to go through the town and cross the level crossing which is invariably down meaning i risk adding 10+mins to my journey, wasting petrol sitting around just cause they cant be bothered to do some resurfacing.

my local council have promised to spend an extra £75,000 on fixing the local roads yet i've yet to see a single workman in the whole village.

makes me sick.. i just dont get the mentality of these people. virtually half the road collapsed outside my road.. i reported it, it was fixed, and then sank and collapsed again a few days later. its now 'fixed' but not levelled so theres basically a 1x2 metre speed bump on the left of the road!!

dont these people have any pride in their work? i couldnt be so half arsed if i was doing it... Evil or Very Mad

It most likely evolved from the snow/cold weather we had over that time, so it's quite possible you were the first to report - especially if it was that big, likely most would have noticed it I expect.

You would be surprised how few people will actually report a problem.

Thankfully Leeds council has a nice online reporting section. Last report I filed has resulted in a 200 yard section of road that takes in 2, 90 bends being almost totally resurfaced as there was a small section before them that had a lot of the surface worn away and most of the white grippy stuff missing from certain sections of the corners.
Upset a lot of car drivers as it required temp traffic lights Laughing
