hello everyone (again),

It would seem I'm destined not to get my bike on the road anytime soon, but I could do with a little guidance to see if I can do it sooner rather than later!

My RS125 has been stood in the garage for about 10 weeks, and when I went to get it out the other day the battery was flatter than a witches tit Mad I've tried leaving it on charge for the last 3 days and i've just been to check it to find that the battery is charged to 13 volts. Should this be enough to start it, as the stubborn bugger wont start? Rolling Eyes

Any guidance would be gratefully appreciated, and I'm sure I won't find out anything otherwise Very Happy

Are witches known to be flat chested then!!!?!? Thinking

Anyway, even if the battery is showing 13v, it doesn't mean it has any 'punch' ... best thing to do is to measure/monitor the voltage when the battery is under load i.e. when you are hitting the starter.

If you are unsure of the batteries health, then it is always a good idea to eliminate this as a problem by using a set of jump leads from a car!! Thumbs Up

hi,
tried bump starting it?
my battery was the same after i left the bike parked up whilst we had all that snow & even when the battery was fully charged, it still wouldnt start!
changed the spark plug & it fired up 2nd attempt.
try that.
either that or your battery is f*cked,
cheers,
GAZ

You've obviously never met my missus, she has been known to be both Rolling Eyes (and just in case, I'm really sorry if you are reading this darling Very Happy )

Excuse my ignorance, but how would I check voltage under load? I'll give the jump leads a go, if not, I suppose it's the cost of a new battery.

Thanks for the advice either way Thumbs Up

Gaz, as you seem to be the person with the answers, any idea where I would begin in changing a plug? my bike maintainance skills at best are very limited Very Happy

hi,
you need to lift up the tank.
take off the riders seat, + get a 5mm hex key, (iirc) then remove the tank bolt up at the top of the tank, just below the yoke/clocks etc.
when you lift the tank up, you will see a black cable with probably red rubber spark plug cap.(sometimes black)
pull this off.
you will then see the top of the spark plug.
remove with a spark plug socket or tool.
replace with a BR9 or BR10 ES or EG.
cheers,
GAZ
ps : get a haynes manual or download a workshop manual, you will learn a lot from either.
i find the wsm invaluable.

Do exactly what you did when you measured the 13v, with he voltmeter still in place, hit the starter and what the voltage does with the bike turning over!! Thumbs Up

there's a digital display on the bike that shows voltage (amongst other things) and voltage drops around 1.5 volts for every 4 or so seconds it's trying to start. I don't hold the starter button much longer, I'm a bit bothered about breaking something!

It seems to turn over fine, it's what I would expect anyway. I do get a change of noise if I open the throttle slightly to give it a bit of fuel, but it just never seems to quite start.

I'd try bump starting it if I were you. The RS' bump really easily. Always works when mine has no battery Thumbs Up

as a rule, Ignore any guage that Is attached to anythIng that comes out of the factory. They have a massIve amount of hysterIsIs buIlt Into them to stop IdIot owners brIngIng them back for servIce every tIme the readIng flIckers slIghtly. In your case, the battery voltage Is plummetIng the moment you press the starter button and the guage takes several seconds to catch up wIth realIty.

Agree wIth others, car battery Is the way to go.

Hi,
as others have said dont rely on the lcd on the bike.
the rs guage is notoriously unreliable.
get yourself a cheap multi-meter & test the voltage at idle & at 5000rpm.
then post results.
the voltage will drop when you press the starter button, but should climb back up when you release the starter button.
voltage should increase when you rev it, & your looking for around 13.8v,iirc.
as for bump starting it, it should bump fairly easy into 2nd gear, however one of my previous rs's refused to ever bump start, unless i done it from a really steep hill & even then it took a couple of attempts!
cheers,
GAZ

The Rs's take forever to start if they have been sitting for a while.

I had the jump starter pack thing connected. Was on the starter for about 5 mins (with breaks) before it started.

Just bump it and ride it for a little bit. Should run fine.
