Having fitted a sprung, single saddle to the Enfield, I realised I now had nowhere to attach my bags. I already have some big pannier racks fitted so I thought I'd go for something a bit different.

As such, behold the awesomeness of my mahogany-effect wooden parcel shelf and integrated ammo box carrier system.

I think it looks rather good.

Excellent stuff. Thumbs Up I love that the gap between the sides of the pannier rack is just the right size for the ammo box. Mr. Green

What is the mahogany effect piece off?

It's a bit of pine bookshelf with the requisite varnish applied. It looked a bit crappy as pine coloured so I used a varnish with woodstain in it.

It's pressure treated so it shouldn't warp too badly.

Clutch is in there. If there was a hole, all the oil (soon to be ATF) would come out of it. There is an adjuster in the middle of the cable outer.

It's a pre-unit engine. Uses a 4-speed albion gearbox on the right. This is the other side view before I fitted the seat and shelf:

Haha! The faux-mahogany shelf is remarkably in keeping with the style of the bike - I love it!
Awesome stuff Very Happy

The plan is to ride it everywhere in the UK (at least one destination in every county) over three months starting the last week in June.

Don't know if it'll be up to it though. I expect to be doing a fair few running repairs (hence the ammo box for tools). You can fix just about anything at the side of the road other than the crank. If that lets go, it's a bit more of a problem.

Cranks do let go. It depends on what day of the week/who did it/how hungover they were/which direction the wind was blowing when it was assembled. There are no dowels in the crankcases and the hollow crank sits on plain bearings, end fed oil by a piston pump. If it's lined up well, it'll last forever. If it isn't, it'll let go in short order.

i would have still thought it would be easiest to have a hole (and a bung obviously to stop the oil escaping) to get access to any clutch adjuster, like this on the norton primary chaincase.

What's easiest and most logical is, in almost every case, not what they've done on this bike. It somehow seems to work after a fashion though.

Fucking right with the mahogany there Stinky! Laughing

Was considering the single saddle myself mainly to make the ride a little softer (I've got the aftermarket Hagon shocks on the rear and it's still like riding a hardtail!) but was running into the same problem of not wanting to put tent/luggage across the rear mudguard.

Similarly to Virus, PM me if you fancy a solid roof over your head (and garage full of tools!) when you're up around Inverness. When is it you're planning on doing the trip? As I said in another thread of yours, I did about 800miles over a few days on mine last summer and the only things I had to deal with were mainly bits and pieces being shaken off the bike. Tappet checking/adjustment was a daily task, as was topping up the oil but other than that she was fine. I've just had a set of Dunlop K70s fitted to mine in place of the old Avon SMs and am hoping to get some use out of them!

I loved the look of the single saddle but the modern ones are real flimsy & keep breaking

the piece of metal that holds the springs onto the front of the frame is way too thin & snaps after a few weeks

I had to ride back to brum from the isle of white with my sleeping bag rammed under the saddle one time, so I picked up an old 50's one from an auto jumble that's still going strong 5 years on

oh yeah.. nice rack, by the way Very Happy
