So who's gonna stump up the cash to save a white elephant then, so that people can walk by it and not even notice it's there?

Is that what you see Britain as? A car park?

Not the case at all, and I never said anything like it. But realistically, it's £800k that SOMEONE has to pay for, so who's it gonna be? And that's just to get it back to being "safe" isn't it? Rather than actually being used for anything?

Personally, I think the decision not to list it has got to come down to some dodgy councillor somewhere taking a back-hander - there's no way that's not worth Grade 2 status with the amount of tripe they list nowadays.

Car park or historic building?

Problems like these are only going to be solved if all those involved are willing to make compromises, so the logical answer is to turn the building into a multi story car park. Very Happy

Britain as a car park? I see it as less tbh.

About 1,000 people signed a petition to save the building, which until last year was used by Medway Council.

Hardly an outcry.

It's a building. An unexciting one at that. Photograph it and knock the fcuker down. It's hardly a colosseum.

I'll use my favourite quote...

Sounds like Hong Kong, there is barely any culture or history here, although when they build over things they cut the thing out of the ground and move it elsewhere.

The problem is the same in Derby, they are demolishing perfectly serviceable buildings for featureless box buildings as part of a regeneration project, but when they removed the Co-Op cow which is a basically a big ugly light-up sign people were in uproar, progress is fine but at least make it interesting to look at for the sake of people's sanity.

Twenty-odd years ago in Shrewsbury the Council 'dismantled' a half-timbered house built I think in 1696 to provide space for a car park, it probably ended up in some-ones wood-burner. There must have been a lot of 'back-handers' then and now I expect to legitimise this official vandalism.

So who is going to cough-up the cash to sustain an object which has no purpose other than a very small foot note in history? How about the state removes some cash from the NHS budget to fund this building.

I live quite near, and it's in the papers often. Medway is becoming fast a concrete jungle with all buildings with any character being demolished for flats and "affordable" accomodation.

The thing everyone's annoyed with is Medway council has said about how much it would be to repair it and the upkeep etc. Yet moved into a building that cost them just as much to buy and has a higher maintence bill and utilities expense.

Medway's a shithole. Especially Strood. I bought a bike from there once and got lost in the many scummy streets because all the road signs had been spray painted over. Then you have the really confusing fancy odd bits here and there.

Lets be honest here, if the world ever gets out of the recession and when we have floating cars and a city planet like in Star Wars, we are merely going to have pictures anyway.

It's like saying oh we should have kept the wooden huts, because that was what we used to be. I see it as, I'll be dead before anyone forgets that building was there. Buildings will outlive people, and photographic memories of it saved somewhere will outlive the buildings.

Should they be replaced with souless grey hunks though? I wouldn't mind if they at least made an effort with the architecture.
