.... gs500? Embarassed

Yeah, ZXR750 to GS500. Don't people normally go in the other direction?

It's not great but then nor was my budget.
My ZXR needs serious R&R so had to buy something cheap for the daily 48mile commute.

34,000 miles. 1993. Local. All the important stuff seems right.

I have some questions on what to expect.

1.) General MPG?
2.) Reliability
3.) How many miles are these things normally good for? (Engine wise)

Anything else you would like to chime in!

Regards and thanks.

Mine is great for reliability, carrys me around absolutely everywhere, been from Cardiff to Bristol a few times and never misses a beat. Unfortunately, they look so bad you will probably cry yourself to sleep every night and your cock will fall off from lack of use.

10 quid generally gets me 150 miles or so.

Only time it's ever let me down was when it was particularly cold, the choke lever simply froze solid Laughing

No idea, training schools seem to put vast mileages on them without too much trouble and mine still starts without any drama at 38k miles. Sounds like a bag of nails if I'm honest, but then that seems to be universal with every one I've ridden.

Sort the rear shock out and it's a surprisingly nimble little bike. My only real gripe is the lack of modern tyre options with the stock wheels.

Thanks for the input.
Yeah I understand there may be an image issue. Laughing

But I've got to the stage where I'm just sick of pouring money into the ZXR just to keep the bare minimum working for the road.

The engine's sound (60,000k) and I don't doubt it'll go on for many more 1000s as it's completely over engineered, as is the gearbox.
I ripped open another zxr high milage and rings, pistons and bore were completely in tolerance. I was amazed.

But everything else hasn't aged so well so here's to a new era and some good time to get the ZXR completely rebuilt from ground up.

I have a 93 GS500E in my side alley..
written off, but still turns over and runs fine, 26,000 miles.

I have a nexxus exhaust ... just the end can and part of the pipe.
if you are interested? not too bad condition, will polish before selling obviously.

Its a damn good bike.. think mine was running rich and over fuelling.. got from maidstone, kent to peterborough on a tank. 124 miles..pretty bad going, but was sitting at 100mph on motorway for about 100 of those miles!

bloody great bikes, one of the very few bikes ive owned that i would consider owning again, the only other being a ag175 Very Happy possibly another xr600 Very Happy

i wouldnt own another zxr750 again.... mobile torture rack Very Happy

Ok so collected the bike last night.
Not bad condition for year. The important things seem sound.

Rode it 41 miles home and rode it 24miles to work today after checking important bits over first.

Well, going from a ZXR750 to this is certainly a noticable downgrade. Don't appreciate how good braking and suspension components are on a fully fledged (for the time) sports bike.

GS500 handles like what it is, a budget commuter. Front brake is completely wooden and not very good at all (will properly give this a going over on the weekend)

Rear brake is dangerously(as in not safe) good, smallest amount of pressure seems too much. Just seems too powerful for the bike.

Engine's quite underpowered but riding it like a two stroke is quite fun and it's got a nice enough tone to it and does seem to plod along the motorway at 80 with no problems at all.

I'm certainly not dissapointed, I guess I just didn't expect such dramatic change. For what it is, an A to B commuter on the cheap it's serving it's purpose very well and it's kind fun to nip around on.

After riding my 125 for nearly 2 years now, reading your post makes no sense to me yet - I would kill for a bike like a GS500 right now. I would try not to go as far as to think you are being spoilt by much bigger bikes but I have to remember that I don't have experience of these bigger bikes myself yet.

I've endured more miles than the majority of those who use 125's in two years (I think?) and find my Honda actually very comfortable and very well handling. It might be the case that actually while the GS500 has much more power, it might not even match up to the same levels of comfort and handling (and those little things like braking as you mentioned) all of which also have to be scaled up to a comparable level because it's a bike that goes lots faster than mine.

Still, I'm glad you're enjoying your plodding along machine and really wish *cough* padwaxk88 *cough* had of given me the chance to try out his GS500 on that ride to London before he wrote it off Razz

ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston?

Is that not a sign of brake hose wear (time to replace)?

Read the 3 words prior to your quote.

I did read the 3 words beforehand. But i also read the start of the sentence too (which i've quoted), which made it sound as though he is calling the front brake "wank" despite having been using it with a dodgy hose and possibly knackered old pads too (which would make it pretty "wank" whether it was any good in the first place or not).

The more important question is whether it is actually "wank" with a new (or at least good condition) standard rubber hose and new (/ good condition) standard pads. I'd wager CHR15 hasn't tried it like this based on what he said; making the first part of the sentence a bit of an unqualified statement, which i was trying to point out.

I found mine to handle surprisingly well. Pissed off a few sportsbike riders at local roundabouts. I got 140ish miles to a tank abusing it. It took 6 crashes above 30mph and then dumping the clutch at redline at standstill repeatedly to kill mine.
