.... gs500?
Yeah, ZXR750 to GS500. Don't people normally go in the other direction?
It's not great but then nor was my budget.
My ZXR needs serious R&R so had to buy something cheap for the daily 48mile commute.
34,000 miles. 1993. Local. All the important stuff seems right.
I have some questions on what to expect.
1.) General MPG?
2.) Reliability
3.) How many miles are these things normally good for? (Engine wise)
Anything else you would like to chime in!
Regards and thanks. ____________________ **WAS FITTED "WRONG WAY ROUND" !** CANT ACCOUNT FOR THE STUPID ! |

Mine is great for reliability, carrys me around absolutely everywhere, been from Cardiff to Bristol a few times and never misses a beat. Unfortunately, they look so bad you will probably cry yourself to sleep every night and your cock will fall off from lack of use. ____________________ Journalist, student, egotist.

10 quid generally gets me 150 miles or so.
Only time it's ever let me down was when it was particularly cold, the choke lever simply froze solid
No idea, training schools seem to put vast mileages on them without too much trouble and mine still starts without any drama at 38k miles. Sounds like a bag of nails if I'm honest, but then that seems to be universal with every one I've ridden.
Sort the rear shock out and it's a surprisingly nimble little bike. My only real gripe is the lack of modern tyre options with the stock wheels. ____________________ 2010 Triumph 1050 Sprint ST |

Thanks for the input.
Yeah I understand there may be an image issue.
But I've got to the stage where I'm just sick of pouring money into the ZXR just to keep the bare minimum working for the road.
The engine's sound (60,000k) and I don't doubt it'll go on for many more 1000s as it's completely over engineered, as is the gearbox.
I ripped open another zxr high milage and rings, pistons and bore were completely in tolerance. I was amazed.
But everything else hasn't aged so well so here's to a new era and some good time to get the ZXR completely rebuilt from ground up. ____________________ **WAS FITTED "WRONG WAY ROUND" !** CANT ACCOUNT FOR THE STUPID ! |

congrats, i had a gs with similar miles, i added another 35000, then gave to my brother who added another 20k, it never broke down once, although i had to replace the chain a few times, and the starter relay, i did the clearances at 50000 miles and only 1 shim needed to be changed,
bloody great bikes, one of the very few bikes ive owned that i would consider owning again, the only other being a ag175 possibly another xr600
i wouldnt own another zxr750 again.... mobile torture rack ____________________ the humans are dead

After riding my 125 for nearly 2 years now, reading your post makes no sense to me yet - I would kill for a bike like a GS500 right now. I would try not to go as far as to think you are being spoilt by much bigger bikes but I have to remember that I don't have experience of these bigger bikes myself yet.
I've endured more miles than the majority of those who use 125's in two years (I think?) and find my Honda actually very comfortable and very well handling. It might be the case that actually while the GS500 has much more power, it might not even match up to the same levels of comfort and handling (and those little things like braking as you mentioned) all of which also have to be scaled up to a comparable level because it's a bike that goes lots faster than mine.
Still, I'm glad you're enjoying your plodding along machine and really wish *cough* padwaxk88 *cough* had of given me the chance to try out his GS500 on that ride to London before he wrote it off ____________________ will never give up his CG. G: With my GSXR I do often effectively use it as a scooter with a clutch in town.
ms51ves3: why does it need 500 miles? Are you teaching it how to be a piston? |

I found mine to handle surprisingly well. Pissed off a few sportsbike riders at local roundabouts. I got 140ish miles to a tank abusing it. It took 6 crashes above 30mph and then dumping the clutch at redline at standstill repeatedly to kill mine.
