When the clutch is fully depressed or free, theres is slack and the clutch lever can be pressed so much withouth enagaging the clutch so it has some slack on it, how tdo i tighten it up so it stiffens up properly when fully deporessed, i tried adjust the cable by the clutch lever and this seems to have made it worse, as ther is now more slack, this is causing the gears to sometimes slip.

Adjust it at the bottom?

Usually there are two lock nuts on each end, your cable should usually have threads on it right, when your clutch wears out you adjust it so the bolts are closer to the open ends of the threads than the cable end of the threads, you just keep adjusting the nut (my NTV had 1.5 inches of this I think) until the clutch cable is taut when released.

Else you've burgered your clutch

Post photos, I think you may need to screw the end of the cable back into the clutch assembly.

4mm is a tad thin, mind I'd probably try to get some adjustment at the bottom to get at least 1cm on the top as the force on it is quite heavy.

yes it will.
the cable will adjust at both ends.
generally you adjsut at the bottom for major adjustments and then tweak things at the top to make it suit you as a personal preference.

so tighten the top adjuster all of the way back in, this will give you lots of slack, then adjust it at the bottom end until things firm up, it shouldnt be tight, but firm. usually there should be some play left at the lever so you may find yourself loosening it back off again but that's ok.
then when you're almost happy, adjus tthe top end back out a little until you find that there's some play, but not too much and you're happy with the position of the lever when the cluth engages.

adjusting the bottom

there is a like a small screw i take it thats the locking nut if i undo that a little and then clockwise the bigger thingy looks like a screw but its not and then the when slack is gone tighten the ocking nut then adjust the top, doing this after screwing the cable at the top all the way in.

this seem right?

and thanks the helping the hopeless out Smile, both of yuz.

think am gonn aleave it the way it is andf get a pro to do it monday. icant seem to get the nut loose on the bottom anyway.

as long as that screw set up you're looking at is for the clutch assembly and nothing else, then yes that'll be how you do it. then adjust the top back out.

i cant think of much that that sort of set up would be for other than the clutch, cos i doubt you're looking at the carbs or anything else.
it should be at the end of the clutch cable - if that's what you see then you are right on how to adjust it i think. if you're still unsure, count how many turns you make of each screw and if nothing's changed, you can still put it back to how it was easy enough.

that's absloutly fine.

the point of the adjster is to loosen it out until you're happy. it doesnt need to be close, so long as it isn't loose or wobbling (when you unscrew it too far) 5mm is fine and sounds good.

your job is done.

the cable that sits in the adjustor wobbles very slightly (normal play?) im guessing over time it has scrwed it self closer to the clutch and the previous owner has been bothered to retighten it the clutch feels nice and firm now with no free play so im cool with that.

yer it will wobble. there's a gap to make sure things work properly and dont stick, when you turn the steering the angle changes a bit, if it was a tight fit you may en dup with problems ... now get out for an afternoon ride and enjoy your work!
