As the title really, I have been offerd a YBR125 on an 05 plate for 125 quid, its tatty but ridable , it has tax and test.

Now then, I need to get it back the 400 odd miles from edinbugh to north wales:
I plan to get the train up there
Ive worked out 2 options for getting the bike back:

Insure it (£123) and ride it back

Join the AA, get them to bring it back (remove a push rod or somthing equaly unfixable) (would I still need to insure it for the aa to bring it back?)

what would you do ?

Ride it!

Make sure you're covered for breakdowns just in case, but go up there nice and early and have a steady plod back.

Sure it'll be a challenge, but it'll be an experience, and in a few years time when you're hacking across Europe, or doing the 4 corners ride or John 'O' Groats to Lands end, you'll look back and realise how little adventures like that contributed to your ability to just get up, plan a route, pack some stuff and bugger off on your bike!

Last time I checked, the free insurance for new vehicles was only available for cars, may be different now.

Remember there's a 14 day 'cooling off' period for insurance, for which you should be able to get a refund without a cancellation fee.

I recently got insured on a GSXR I was looking at on a Saturday, then rang up first thing Monday because I did not buy it.
For the day and half's insurance they refunded me what I paid minus 1p! I think they must have only just put it through on Monday morning when it cancelled, so they only counted it as being active for an hour or whatever.

If you're sure the bike is in good nick (well, relatively), not stolen, etc then I'd be maybe tempted to ask the seller to disable it someway, then ring up and say you're making your own way back with a lift from a friend as need to be back ASAP, can they collect?
Haven't heard of recovery companies asking for insurance, but they do check tax these days.

Are you sure it's rideable? You know what some sellers are like, utter liars. For £125 I'd be wary. Have a back up plan to riding it back in case it's a total heap.

Carole Nash refund you all your money minus £25 if you cancel your 12-month insurance policy within 14 days (a flat fee of 25 quid...).

That may well be cheaper than short-term insurance.

I believe it's illegal for them to charge an extra fee within in the 14 day grace period.

And, as Joe says, I'd be wary personally. The GSXR I didn't buy not only wasn't as described (despite me specifically questioning before hand), but ended up making some scary noises on the test ride - very glad they happened then not after buying - suspect the seller didn't expect this, however.

AFAIK only in business to business (tele)sales there is no statutory canx period.

Just one thing. Does jamie have a full licence?

It's a bit of an epic run in Winter without motorways. You're pretty much looking A7, A6, A59, A41 meaning you have to go through the centre of Liverpool among other things.

A6 is OK, but can be a bit wild (or even closed) at this time of year going up over Shap summit

But it is great fun the A6 over shap. Although I found my 125 was lacking some umpf to enjoy it.

Epic ghost run down the other side though. I did it on a C90 once and saw 65 with the engine off.
